Beauty Fix

Every week we take on your questions about makeup, skincare, hair and more and provide all the answers. This week we offer two fixes for tired eyes: one tip will ensure your undereye puffiness is no more and the other works like a charm to brighten dull eyes. And while we advocate for wearing SPF year-round, with spring just a few weeks away it’s more important that ever to add some sunscreen into your beauty routine. We suggest one product that even oily-skinned girls won’t shy away from. Have a question we haven’t answered? Email us at [email protected].

Kiehl's Facial Fuel Eye De-puffer

How do I put my tired, puffy eyes to rest?
So I’m not the only person whose eyes have looked particularly exhausted as of late? I can take remote comfort in that! I’m not sure if it’s the computer screen and smartphone screen exposure (read: constant staring), but my eyes sure have seen brighter days! Undereye puffiness is downright distracting when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror, isn’t it? Taking a nod from the age-old trick of placing a chilled spoon on the undereye area, grab Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Eye De-puffer ($34, kiehls.ca) and toss it in the fridge. The genius little stick contains caffeine and Artic root to reduce puffiness and revive the eye area, and the fridge factor will only make it that much more soothing on tired eyes. Bonus: this lightweight formula wears remarkably well under makeup, so you won’t have to fret about creased concealer halfway through the day!

Estée Lauder Pure Color Intense Kajal Eyeliner in Blackened Sapphire

What can I do to make the whites of my eyes look brighter?
In continuation of the tired eye scenario, sometimes we can all use a little help after a late night to look a bit more awake than bleary-eyed, right? There’s no need to go over the top with a slew of different products—simplicity can be on your side in this situation! Don navy eyeliner to counteract eye redness, like Estée Lauder Pure Color Intense Kajal Eyeliner in “Blackened Sapphire” ($24, esteelauder.ca), to apply to your top lashline as close to the lash roots as possible. A kajal formula is excellent due to the soft consistency, which gives you the option of diffusing the line if you want a bit more colour. Redness of the lower lid can be neutralized with a light-coloured waterproof liner applied along the waterline, such as Chanel Le Stylo Yeux Waterproof in “Beryl” ($28, at Chanel counters), which is a light-reflective lavender shade.

Sunday Riley Effortless Breathable Tinted Primer

What’s the deal with mineral makeup settling into fine lines? Can I do anything to prevent this?
If you aren’t an advocate of using a primer prior to makeup application, please reconsider! Primers aren’t just a ton of silicones these days, but rather smoothing and plumping concoctions that do impact how a foundation and the rest of your makeup will sit on the skin’s surface. Sunday Riley Effortless Face Primer ($48, sephora.com) is an oxygenating and plumping primer that contains nylon to avoid settling into fine lines and it also has a slight tint to the formula, making it a viable option for anyone who prefers a true no-makeup look. Buffing a bit of foundation, such as Laura Mercier Mineral Powder Foundation ($42, sephora.com), over this primer is a solid bet for the glow of mineral makeup without the creasing!

Jo Malone Sugar Spice collection

I like gourmand scents, but anything overly sweet can be headache-inducing. Any suggestions for a happy medium?
Gourmand fragrances are most definitely an acquired taste. Even when you like them, some fragrances can register a bit too sweet, which can be more nauseating than not. This is very subjective, mind you, but also quite common for fragrances inspired by food scents. If cloying, sugary fragrances feel a bit more juvenile than refined, look to the Jo Malone Sugar & Spice collection ($70 each, at Holt Renfrew), which is a limited edition range of five fragrances that are inspired by British desserts, such as lemon tarts, ginger biscuits and bittersweet orange with chocolate. There’s something that’s sure to appeal to the foodie fragrance lover in you, but will spare you the less-than-desired head rush. Delectable!

Consonant 100% Natural Matte Finish Sunscreen SPF 15

I want to always wear sunscreen, but find that having oily skin makes it challenging to find one to wear under my makeup.
As always, I applaud anyone who feels a need to wear sunscreen daily. It’s beyond essential for any skincare routine! That being said, finding a sunscreen that gels with your skin type and makeup can be a bit of an experiment. Seeking out a mattifying sunscreen formula, such as Consonant 100% Natural Matte Finish Sunscreen SPF 15 ($36, consonantskincare.com), is an oily-skinned person’s best bet. The Canadian-made formula contains micronized titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which means zero chalkiness upon application (which is the classic stigma surrounding sunscreen, right?) and a matte effect that won’t interfere with how your makeup wears on your skin. Slather it on!
