February 2014: Letter from the editor

PHOTOGRAPHY BY VANESSA HEINS; HAIR AND MAKEUP BY GRACE LEE FOR PLUTINO GROUP/MAYBELLINE NEW YORK CANADA; SHOT ON LOCATION AT 30 ROSEDALE RD., TORONTO

If You Don’t Like Our Cover, Blame Lady Gaga.

It’s the photo she hand-picked for FASHION, along with a second shot to go with her story, “Gaga” (page 93). As she told features editor Elio Iannacci in their two-hour face-to-face chat, “I fight for images, for music, for the community of fans.” And, as much as I am up for an artistic scrap, I knew this would be a losing battle. Gaga wanted the wacky glasses to stay in the shot, and Gaga got her way.
Her steadfastness, though, is understandable. Gaga is, as Iannacci writes, a living, breathing canvas. What she wears is as deliberate as Picasso’s charcoals or Van Gogh’s oils. The word “unwearable” isn’t in her vocabulary, and thank goodness for that. It’s all part of her mission to open our minds about fashion, and so much more.

Fashion enthusiasm is expressed in many forms—even by someone who doesn’t like to shop. Writer Marilisa Racco would rather use her free time for other pursuits, which means that when she does spend, it’s usually on bigger-ticket items that will stand the test of time. She makes a strong case for slowing down and buying less in “Fast Forward” (page 52). Me? I swing between saving for luxury indulgences and giving in to the short-term satisfaction of a fast-fashion find.

Whether you are a constant shopper or not, you probably need a little help to fund your habit. Contributor Shawna Cohen explores the best ways to mine cash from your closet in “The Price is Right”(page 56). She even found a swap site where members can “shop” for free!
Getting the biggest bang for your buck usually requires lots of research. But FASHION’s 12th Annual Readers’ Choice Beauty Awards feature compiles our readers’ favourite makeup, fragrance, skin and hair-care items in one handy spot. Check out which products made this year’s list, starting on page 61.

Makeup is one topic executive editor Jacquelyn Francis gets our Olympic athletes to open up about (sex is another!) in “Third Degree” (page 90), just one of many great reads in this issue. Let us know which stories you enjoyed most at [email protected].
