The Golden Globes may be considered a red carpet test-run for the Oscars, but when it comes to beauty, it’s when A-listers tend to go all out. For the 2014 Golden Globes, it was all about bright lip colours and dramatic eye looks. The classic Old Hollywood red lip was ditched in favour of burnt shades of berry and orange. Jennifer Lawrence wore an almost-goth burgundy lip while Lupita Nyong’o added a metallic hit to her dark lipstick shade with a tinge of gold shimmer.

Of course, not everyone went dark: Both Zoe Saldana and Zooey Deschanel opted for a brighter take on the red carpet trend with perfect burnt orange-red pouts. Elisabeth Moss’s lipstick was a stand-out berry colour, just a few shades lighter than the purple hits in her shimmering J. Mendel gown—perhaps berry’s the official colour of award winners, as Cate Blanchette was also wearing it on her lips. And rounding out the lipstick colour spectrum was Emma Watson, whose punchy shade of pink had just enough blue undertones to keep it from looking overly saccharine.

As for eye makeup, tightlining reined supreme. Forget thick swoops of eyeliner or retro-cat eye styles—a thin outline of black liner on both upper and lower lids was the dominant makeup trend on the 2014 Golden Globes red carpet. (The trick with tightlining is ensuring coverage on your waterline, aka the part of your eyelid that almost touches your eyeball itself.)

Kate Mara did it best, pairing a rich black eyeliner with a light silver shimmer for a stunning wide-eyed effect. Emma Roberts‘ take was more of a smoky eye look, thanks to deeper charcoal shades of shadow on her eyelids, but neutral lips and cheeks kept the drama in check. Alison Williams rounded out the trio of actresses who paired black eyeliner with silver shadow, opting for shimmering colour with a hint of blue to better complement her light eyes. And should you think that you can only wear one Golden Globes beauty trend at a time, just look at Jennifer Lawrence and Lupita Nyong’o, who both rocked deep lips and tightlined eyes for maximum red carpet glamour.
