Awards show hair and makeup: The Beauty Panel recreates their favourite red carpet looks

red carpet beauty intro

Awards show season is a giving season. It provides hours of entertainment, from jokes on stage to so many memes (John Travolta mispronunounced name generator anyone?). But more than anything else, award shows give us plenty of hair and makeup looks to obsess over—and then master. Unlike the stunning designer dresses the stars wear, red carpet beauty looks are totally attainable! Whether you duplicate a favourite look or use it as a starting point for your own creation, this past awards show season provided us with lots of inspiration.

From Olivia Wilde’s expertly done gamine eyeliner to Jennifer Lawrence’s high flying pixie cut, there are plenty of recent looks to covet and replicate. With Pinterest and Tumblr being endless sources of red carpet beauty pics, there is no better time to flex your makeup and hair skills and get creative.

Challenge 52: What’s your favourite red carpet beauty look? See the answers now! »

We asked our Beauty Panel to recreate their favourite red carpet look and take us through the steps to get there. Maggie Ng from Beauty PhD took on Rita Ora’s glamorous waves and high-wattage makeup from the Grammys red carpet, but tailored it to work with her natural assets. Meanwhile, Paint Me Pretty’s Laurelle Alexandra opted to emulate Maria Menounos’ smoky eye and neutral lip from Sunday’s Oscars, perfect for a night out on the town where you might be nervous about a bold lip smudging. Take a peek through all the looks—and maybe you too will be inspired to inject some red carpet glamour into your life!

With all these award shows happening, from the Oscars to the Grammys, these are definitely some great events to find some beauty inspiration. One of my favourite red carpet looks this year was Rita Ora at the 2014 Grammys. Her curls had a cool vintage Hollywood glamour to them and her makeup complemented her wardrobe really well. Her makeup stood out to me, as we’re used to seeing a lot of celebrities playing it safe with bronze, taupes and neutral tones or maybe red lips with a winged eyeliner. Glad she took some risk and played it up with a bit of colour for her eye makeup!

Since I have very different features from Rita Ora, it was a bit of a challenge to duplicate this look! I don’t really have double eyelids, so I had to bring the colour of the eyeshadow up further for it to be visible. And of course I’m missing the massive lashes! I chose to keep my lashes more subtle, since I wasn’t actually walking any red carpets that day! For the hair, I used a 1″ curling wand. If I wanted to achieve more volume at the roots, I could opt to use hot rollers or tease the base with some dust powder hair products before curling or simply set the curls after using the iron.

The one person on the red carpet at this year’s Academy Awards that really blew me away was Maria Menounos, which is why I was really eager to duplicate her look. Everything about her look for the evening was amazing in my opinion—I mean even her manicure was fantastic. Her makeup, however really had the wow factor, she looked absolutely stunning.

She appears to have a worn a really subtle smoky eye with a nude lip. It looks great with her overall outfit because she wore such a sparkly elegant dress that wasn’t overly colourful or dramatic. Which is why she was able to pull off a more dramatic eye. I also usually much prefer to play up the eye rather than the lips. It’s a safe move when attending something as nerve racking as the Oscars. A dark red lip can be intimidating because you don’t want it to fade or rub off in any way. Where as when you go with a nude lip you don’t really have to worry about it. It’s much easier to touch up.

I absolutely love awards season and all of the endless inspiration the shows provide. My favourite beauty moment on the red carpet this year was Kate Hudson’s shimmering smokey eye from the Oscars. Her smokey eye was perfect—not too dark and dramatic—and really enhanced her whole look that evening!

I decided to go with soft pinkish browns on my lids and added a bronzey brown liner to my upper and lower lash lines and smudged it out a little, while finishing it off with a black volumizing mascara. Like Kate, I went with a soft pink blush and a bit of a creamy highlight on the cheeks and pink glossy lips.
