The selfie is having quite the moment. First it was crowned the Oxford English Dictionary’s word of the year, then it made Twitter-breaking records at the Oscars and we dare you to try and get “#Selfie” out of your head after one listen. But despite it’s popularity, taking a picture-perfect selfie (see what we did there?) can still be a challenge for many. Pose choices, lighting and photo editing apps aside, sometimes all you need is a little bit of makeup to make all the difference. Which is why we’ve turned to the Beauty Panel for their tips on how to look good in a photograph. With a few easy tricks (primer, your fave mascara, an extra dab of gloss) you’ll look like a selfie pro in no time! And, as an added bonus, all these tips work for looking good in all other types of photos, too.

Everyone loves taking a good #selfie.  It’s all about the lighting and filter, but your makeup and hair definitely plays a huge role in getting the perfect shot.

I love my skin looking flawless.  Luckily, I was blessed with great skin, but I still love wearing a full-coverage foundation to have a perfect canvas to start.  Make sure there’s no SPF in it your foundation so your skin actually looks like your skin (foundations with SPF can make you look whiter than you actually are).  When it comes to playing up your features, I typically will make my contour a little heavier so it shows perfectly sculpted cheekbones (be careful with this though, you still want it to look natural in real life). To complement the contour, highlight under your eyes with a concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone to really make those peepers pop.  I love keeping my lips nude, so my eyes are the focal feature. Finally, make sure you set your makeup with a pressed powder to mattify the face, adding a highlight to your cheekbones.

For hair, bigger is always best, my usual selfie consists of full, voluminous curled hair. Good luck and you’ll be on the “popular page” in no time.

Whether you’re filming a YouTube video or going to an event, being camera ready doesn’t have to take a team of experts to get you primed for the lens. It’s also not necessary to wear a heavy face of makeup as long as you keep a few key elements in mind.
– Define your features but don’t overwhelm them. For example, choose false lashes with a soft tapered look instead of strong voluminous ones.
– Brighten pale skin tones with one colourful element as not to look washed out by the lighting.
– Texture shows on camera, high definition means you need to pay extra attention to how the makeup sits on your skin. Dust off any extra setting powder to make sure skin looks velvety instead of dry.
– When in doubt, wear a matching lip and cheek in the same colour family to create an eye catching but balanced look.
– Always use hairspray. You may not see the little baby hairs and flyaways in the mirror but they have a sneaky way of popping out when the shutter goes off.
– Remember that you can, and probably should wear a bit more makeup for the camera than you do in everyday life but that doesn’t mean it needs to be obvious. Strategic colour choices and attention to detail are what really makes the final result polished.

In this age of high-definition, you can see everything. If you eyeliner is out of whack, it will show! If your foundation is caked on, it will show. When it comes to getting on camera ready for me, less is more. Look towards HD friendly makeup. I’m lucky to have such good day skin days lately—so I just opt for an HD concealer. I applied the LA Girl High Definition Pro Concealer in chestnut under my eyes. My hair is always frizzy. So for me products from the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth line are perfect! So try not to stress out and work your best angles! You will be fine!
