How to get perfect lashes: 4 Beauty Panel tips for making your eyes stand out
There’s no question that mascara had a major moment on the Spring 2014 runways. From doll-like fashion à la Mulberry to a natural look at Ralph Lauren to clumpy like-effect at Preen, makeup artists freely waved the wand creating a range of different effects at a variety of shows.
As one of the fundamental tools to make eyes stand out, one may argue that mascaras are one of the easiest makeup products to use. However, with celebrities and models rocking enviable bold lashes on the red carpets and runways, mimicking the A-list look may not be as easy to achieve. So this week, we asked our Beauty Panel members to show us their fav look and share their beauty insider tips on how to get perfect lush lashes.

If you’ve never been in the market for falsies, fret not because The Bunnie Hole’s Gerry Xun shares her tips on finding your perfect fit. Lashes are a girl’s best friend. My everyday look involves a flick of liquid liner, a single shade of shadow and of course, falsies. Here are my 3 tips to make you feel fancy instead of flustered when wearing those lashes.
– Comfort is usually measured by the material used for the spine of your false lash strip. This is where the clusters of lashes are knotted to the band and can be made of either hard plastic or an invisible “fishing wire” like thread. My preference is for the invisible bands, but those with hooded eyes or single eyelids may prefer the firmer plastic type as it gives a bit of lift to the eyes.
– With the abundance of lash styles to choose from, it usually comes down to length versus volume. My everyday makeup look involves thin and lightweight lashes that add more length with a bit of volume at the roots. These tend to look more natural and give the illusion that they are an extension of your own natural lashes. Have larger eyes? You can get away with a more voluminous style.
– Nothing’s worse than having your false lashes lift away at the corners only to realize while on your bathroom break that you’ve been hanging loose all day. To prevent this, apply a thin strip of glue to the lash band from end to end, let dry 10-15 seconds and then add an extra bit of glue at the ends before applying them to your lids.

I love big, bold lashes. Although I don’t often sport falsies (love the look of them, I just get lazy), I am obsessed with having big lashes. The bigger the better, right? I have gone through endless tubes of mascara and multiple eyelash curlers (I swear by the Shu Uemura!), and although some may be much better than others, I have finally gotten my mascara routine down pat.
For big “come-hither” lashes, start off curling them right at the base – a few pumps of your eyelash curler will do the trick. Then, with mascara that has a wand with dense bristles, apply a coat of this to your lashes. I love CoverGirl Clump Crusher by Lash Blast because the wand really does get in there coating and separating every lash. After, grab your fav mascara – or mascaras if you really want to up the flirt factor – and add a few coats to your lashes to really get big, beautiful eyelashes that will have people second-guessing whether they’re real or not.

I’m not “born with it,” so naturally I want the longest, thickest, blackest lashes. That, for me would either be semi-permanent lash extensions at my favourite place in Toronto (Fembotika) or these mink lashes in strip format. I love these lashes because they are super soft, cruelty-free and the flexible band makes it easy to apply. My secret weapon for idiot-proof application? Shu uemura’s applicator, which looks like funky tweezers, helps me apply the falsies right at the base of my own lashes. To be honest, I am still a little afraid of putting on false lashes myself, but take your time, breathe and everything will hopefully fall into place. Oh, and I almost forgot! My last tip for the thickest looking lashes ever? Lining my waterlines (that often-teary part under your lash line) with a creamy, super black pencil. Even before mascara, it creates the illusion of lashes that are not even there. Try it!

When it comes to styling my lashes, I actually really like the look of lash extensions! I got them done for the first time at KS Beauty Lounges and they look and feel so natural. I’ve been getting so many compliments on them lately! And the best part is, I don’t have to spend any time curling my lashes and applying mascara. I don’t even really need eyeliner either, as the thickness of the lash extensions gives the illusion of eyeliner at the base of my eyelid. Unfortunately, these babies usually only last approximately a month, as you do naturally shed a few lashes per day. So either I opt for a refill or go back to traditional ways. When I don’t have lash extensions on, I like to use my favourite lash curler by Shu Uemura and will frequently use volumizing mascara for a bit of oomph! Some of these volumizing mascaras include Make Up For Ever’s Smoky Extravagant, Rimmel London’s Scandaleyes Show Off and Annabelle’s Le Big Show to name a few.
