Lately, we’ve been inspired by summer hairstyles, from effortless beach waves to gorgeous braids for every event on your calendar. But now that we’ve got our go-to hairstyle under control, we’re faced with the question of how to wear makeup to the beach. Achieving the perfect beach look is no easy task, because a) you’re out in the sun all day, which means makeup is prone to melting and b) you’re going to the beach to relax, so naturally putting so much effort on your face seems a bit much. But before you skip makeup altogether for your summer outing, we asked the ladies of Beauty Panel for their advice and their tips on how to wear makeup to the beach without looking over-the-top. Thanks to these experts, we’ve got the solution on how to work the “no makeup” makeup look to the beach.

Challenge 69: How do you wear your makeup at the beach? See the answers now! »

Wearing makeup while looking like you’re not is the key to the perfect beach look according to Beauty Funk’s Sarah Muncaster. Opting for minimal makeup that already has SPF built in is the smart and efficient way to go. Marilou Moles of Twenty York Street is also a big believer in less is more, but she keeps her beauty look interesting by adding a pop of colour on her lips. And if going to the beach isn’t really your thing, fret not because Maggie Ng of Beauty PhD has the solution to perfect tanned (but healthy!) skin.

Let’s face it- wearing makeup to the beach sounds a little ridiculous! But consider acne scars, active zits, under-eye bags and the plethora of hot guys at the beach, and you will find yourself wanting to spruce your face up with a little extra something. The key to wearing makeup to the beach is to make it look like you aren’t wearing any at all. Beach makeup should be the ultimate “no-makeup makeup” look, and if you’re really efficient, you will wear makeup that has SPF built right in. Look great and protect yourself against the sun’s harmful rays? Yes, please! My go-to beach makeup look consists of the Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Face Sunscreen with SPF 45, the Bobbi Brown BB Cream with SPF 35 and the Sugar Fresh Lip Balm in Rose tint with SPF 15. It’s super important to remember to protect your lips with SPF, because having burnt lips is no bueno! Finally, to finish off your look, follow up with a natural coat of your favourite waterproof mascara. Just swipe quick brushes through your lashes to define them, but not enough to make it look like you’re actually wearing mascara. Basically, keep it as minimal as possible, but enough to make sure that you feel your best!

I’ll admit I’m not really one to go to the beach and soak up the sun. There was a time when I was a kid, I used to rollerblade and ride my bicycle everyday and never worried about UV rays and the damage it could cause. Now that I’m a bit more aware, SPF has become my best friend and I try to avoid the sun like the plague! So yes, my legs are so pasty white that you’d have to wear sunglasses to avoid the glare coming off of them, but that doesn’t mean I still can’t get that beachy look. Thanks to Sally Hansen’s Airbrush Legs Spray, I can achieve the look of a fake, but healthy tan.

Made to mimic the look of pantyhose, the lightweight formula sets in 60 seconds and is water- and transfer-resistant. It also leaves a subtle shimmer-finish on the skin. New Palmaria Extract enhances the coverage of veins and imperfections, while stimulating micro-circulation for healthier looking legs and feet. I first got to see the product in action when I was doing hair for a wedding and saw all the bridesmaid’s applying it onto their legs. The result looked great and also very natural, so I decided to give it a try for myself. It’s a bit tricky to apply, as you have to work fast to blend the product well to avoid streaks and unevenness. Removal is pretty easy; you just need soap, water and a washcloth.

As you can see in the photo, I only applied the product to one leg to show the before and after results. Bare legs are okay, but Airbrush Legs are ravishing!

Summer is my absolute favourite season and as much as I take skin (and body) care seriously, during this time of the year, I go easy on my make-up especially for the beach. It seems that the sun and sand have a magical effect on making everybody look amazing!

For keeping it simple, I skip eyeshadows, blushes and foundation altogether and use a bronzed BB Cream with SPF instead. With just a few swipe of black mascara, a bold lip colour that pops out and some bronzing highlighter to accentuate my cheeks, I’m all set for fun at the beach.
