Oils, serums, moisturizers, peels, masks; there’s a lot to do (and know!) when it comes to skincare. Between all the different products on your bathroom counter, and the ingredients that go into them, your list of new words to add to your vocabulary can quickly go from interesting to totally overwhelming. After all, how many times can you possibly google “what’s the difference between salicylic and glycolic acid”? We sat down with skincare expert Peter Thomas Roth to talk skincare, and his three rules will make your head stop spinning once and for all and leave you feeling seriously zen and balanced when it comes to your routine.

1. Au naturel or no naturel?

“A lot of people [look at my line and say] “Well, it’s not really clinical and it’s not all-natural. What is it?” This is my philosophy; if I get sick and a doctor decides I need an antibiotic, then I’m taking the medicine. But I’m also going to have my hot tea and my chicken noodle soup.” explains Roth. “There are natural products mixed in with chemicals. We’re going to fix your problem every way we can.

We have [things like Hijiki seaweed and volcanic ash in our products], but we also have peptides and glycolic acid. If it works I’m going to use it, whether it’s natural or not natural.”

2. Don’t be afraid of trial and error

“If you’re happy with your skincare routine, don’t change it. Your skin will tell you when it’s unhappy,” says Roth. “However, you can always add something in. Not masking? Add a mask into your usual routine. There’s always something you’re not doing in your routine that you could be doing. I don’t believe that you have to come to me [to] give you a whole new routine.”

Speaking of masks, the Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask ($56, sephora.com) has been around for 20 years and is one of the brand’s signature products. In fact, one is sold every minute around the world, so if you’re looking to venture into the world of masking, this is a great place to start.

3. Find products you like using

“If I can I make [a product] a fun experience, I will. Life is short and you should have fun. Masking [especially] is personal “me” time,” says Roth of products like the 24K Gold Mask Pure Luxury Lift & Firm Mask ($92, sephora.com) and the Pumpkin Enzyme Mask ($67, sephora.com), which (respectively) look and smell divine.

“You’re going to use a skincare product more if you enjoy the experience, and then you’ll look better, which is the goal, right? Your goal isn’t to [have a] skincare [regimen].”
