Bad hair days happen to the best of us. Maybe you went to sleep with damp hair (guilty) or forgot to blow-dry your bangs in the morning, or the hair gods just weren’t on your side for no reason whatsoever. So what do you do when you wake up with a mop that once formerly resembled your hair? We posed the question to our Beauty Panel, who showed us how they conquer bad hair days without breaking a sweat.

I feel like nothing without some volume and curls in my hair. I used to wear my hair sleek and straight all the time, but after getting it ombred I found that my hair really looked lackluster without some body. A bad hair day for me is flat roots, bangs that don’t cooperate and overall limp-looking hair. How do I combat this trifecta of hair woes? My trusty GHD Flat Iron is what I use to create sleek, shiny and long-lasting curls along with giving my roots some lift. This is the single most important hair tool in my life and it is my cure-all for any and all bad hair days! There is a bit of a learning curve with curling with a flat iron so make sure you practice with the flat iron off first! Smooth out any flyaways or frizzies with John Frieda’s Frizz Ease and then you and your hair will be ready to face the world!

Imagine this: tomorrow morning you wake up only to find out you have slept through your alarm. You now have mere minutes to get ready and be out the door. No time to mess around. What do you do?

My go-to, quick fix, look-like-I-spent-time-but-I-really-didn’t hairstyle is borrowed from the iconic sex kitten, Brigitte Bardot. When you see pictures of Bardot’s hair it always has this carefree, super voluptuous, je ne sais quoi vibe to it that I just love. I’ve done this style using both freshly washed hair as well as hair that hasn’t been washed for days, and having timed myself before, I can tell you it’s possible to do in less than five minutes.

In this photo I have two-day-old hair that had been previously curled. I refreshed a few sections using my curling iron, wrapping the hair around the barrel and leaving a few inches out at the bottom (this will create more of a bend in the hair as opposed to a full curl). Then I used my hair’s best friend, dry shampoo, to freshen it up even more and to also add a bit of volume and texture.

Now here is the fun part. I will admit it may take a bit of practice to get the art of teasing your hair (aka backcombing) down pat, but it can be a real lifesaver when it comes to hairstyling. Dry shampoo plus teasing equals (big) hair that will listen to you.

For this style, I used the dry shampoo by lifting the hair up and spraying underneath. Brush it out or tousle your hair a bit so the dry shampoo can evenly distribute itself and to make sure there isn’t any white residue left. I then took the top half of my head and teased the hair (from behind my bangs, to the back crown). Important step: Make sure to take your comb and smooth out the top layer, otherwise all of that backcombing will be visible to the world (which can be a cool look, but for this style I opted for the more sleek top). Then I moulded the teased hair into a half updo. I did this by lightly pinching the hair on both sides of my head, gliding it to meet at the middle in the back, and smoothing down the top. Grab two (or sometimes I do four) bobby pins and ‘crisscross’ them where the hair meets to lock it in place. My hair is quite fine, so this holds my hair really well, but if you have thicker hair you could consider a jaw-clip, barrette, or multiple bobby pins.

And there you have it. A beautiful, (fairly) effortless hairstyle you can put together next time you are in a rush!

Products used: Hot Tools 1” curling iron, Batiste Dry Shampoo in Original (their XXL Volume version is my favourite), Goldilocks by Krest teasing comb #3, Goody bobby pins.
