5 coloured mascaras that make a serious case for neon lashes

Did you wear coloured mascara as a teen? You may have, but we’re willing to bet most of you didn’t. Often, the transition from fresh-faced preteen to heavy eye makeup-wearing angst-ridden teenager goes something like this: clear mascara (chances are you still own a tube, but it’s just being used to tame your brows) to standard black/brown mascara—and lots of it. And that’s where it ends. But it shouldn’t! Hear us out.

Did you once think that one-toned shimmery eyeshadow from lid to brow bone was the only real way to apply makeup? Sure. But those days are gone. You’re older and wiser, and yet you’ve rewarded yourself with measly taupe shadow and barely-there winged liner. While we will forever be grateful for the no-makeup look—dewy skin and all—there are many ways to update your look without reverting back to matte skin and smokey eyes. And lately, our favourite way is coloured mascara. It can add a pop of colour that can either be subtle or bold, depending on how you choose to build your mascara (and don’t forget, you can now build up your lashes throughout the day, instead of starting from scratch in the evening, with our favourite mascara resurrector).

When paired with minimal makeup everywhere else, coloured mascara can easily make the transition from sitting in the bottom of your “experiment with when feeling bold” makeup bag to being part of your everyday rotation. Call it your second graduation.
