Golden Globes 2016: The 28 best beauty moments on the red carpet

The Golden Globes are often considered to be the more relaxed version of the Oscars, and many of the women on last night’s red carpet seemed to take that to heart when it came to hair and makeup. Letting their hair down and leaving their makeup low-key, the majority of celebs seemed content to let their natural beauty shine.

Sure, there were a few striking red lips here and there–most notably a glossy blood-red on Jennifer Lopez, a deep, almost burgundy lip on Rooney Mara and a bright red on Jennifer Lawrence that matched her dress. Laverne Cox stood out in a graduated purple lip that went perfectly with her low, tousled bun and green earrings. We were even treated to a few cases of hot pink lipstick, thanks to Maggie Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Olivia Palermo, and Helen Mirren.

But in general, the name of the game at the 2016 Globes was nude lips. Everyone from Amy Schumer to Kate Hudson opted for the modern red carpet classic of nude lipstick paired with dark eye makeup, with either slicked-back updos or tousled, undone hair. Messy bobs and lobs are still particularly popular, and none were sexier than Taraji P. Henson’s. The overall effect on the red carpet was that of fresh-faced, #Iwokeuplikethis beauty (with a serious touch of bedhead).

Still, we appreciated the notable few who made an effort to stand out from the crowd. Sophisticated lobs styled with glamorous old Hollywood waves were popular, as seen on Lady Gaga, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Cate Blanchett. And both JLaw and Alicia Vikander put an interesting twist in their updos–literally.

The biggest beauty trend of the night, however, was a glowing, dewy complexion. Regardless of whether they chose bright lipstick or a natural makeup look, an elaborate updo or a choppy bob, almost every woman there had ridiculously luminous skin. There may very well be a highlighter shortage in Hollywood this week (either that, or everyone got really sweaty).
