If Bellavance designers Nolan Bellavance and Ava Hama had told us that of-the-moment pop star Lorde was the beauty inspiration for their Fall 2014 show, we’d make no objections. At last night’s presentation at The ShOws, dark lipstick à la the New Zealand singer’s signature look was the biggest beauty statement. “She’s kind of this girl that’s breaking out from the mould—so instead of that classically beautiful like bare face, she’s gonna go strong, deep with a colour that you’re not naturally drawn to,” said Cover Girl makeup pro Veronica Chu of the deep-plum lipstick with a distinct brown undertone.

While the lipstick was certainly the focus of the look, Chu spent just as much time ensuring that the skin was flawless and glowing. She started with a light application of Olay Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream followed by dabs of Cover Girl TruBlend Liquid Makeup and Fixstick, applied only where necessary: “We still wanted the skin to breathe and look very touchable.” Concealer was also applied to the lips, to ensure the dark lipstick shade had a solid base. Eyes were left almost bare, with just a subtle wash of gold shadow courtesy Cover Girl Eye Enhancers 4-Kit Shadow in “Sheerly Nudes” and one coat of mascara. Brows were filled in with a complementary-coloured shadow and brushed upwards and outwards with Cover Girl Professional Natural Lash Mascara. Finally, the lipstick. Should you want to copy this look, Bellavance’s brown-red colour is a mix of Cover Girl lip liner in “Sophisticated” and LipPerfection lipstick in “Enchant.”

As for hair, slicked-back ponytails kept the focus on the face. Pantene consulting stylist Justin German said the designers requested a centre part and that they “didn’t want to make it tight, tight, tight to the head.” After applying Pantene Ultimate 10 BB Cream to hair, German pulled hair back but left some of the comb marks visible, in keeping with the simple, bouncy style. Ponytails were placed “not quite at the nape and not quite at the crown—somewhere in the middle,” which can be a tricky spot for those of us with not-so-thick hair. German’s trick? Bungee cord hair ties. Unlike traditional hair elastics, a bungee cord tie locks hair in place and keeps it secure. Of course, a light dab of Pantene Pro-V Stylers Texturizing Sculpting Wax followed by a spray of Pro-V Stylers Flexible Hold Hairspray also helped keep hair runway-ready.
