In Fashion: Lashes
Today’s fringe fad is easy, wearable and utterly feminine. Laura Keogh gives you the backstory.
- It was her knock-kneed silhouette (dubbed an “elongated matchstick”) that earned Leslie Hornby the moniker that would forever be a reminder of 1960s London. But TWIGGY’s practice of drawing in her lashes surely helped the doe-eyed icon earn the title of “The Face of ’66,” as declared by England’s Daily Express. The teen launched a lash craze that caused Yardley Cosmetics to mimic her flappers and market Twiggy Lashes to the masses—an early step in the direction of today’s celebrity-endorsed beauty.
- Nowadays, all we can think of is that awfully messy kiss with David Gest, but before her supremely oddball marriage, LIZA MINNELLI was best known as the beloved daughter of Dorothy (the girl of ruby red slipper fame). An Oscar-winning actress, Minnelli was heralded for her role as Sally Bowles in the 1972 feature film Cabaret. As the showgirl, she flaunted a getup that was always capped with an outrageous set of lashes. Her name became so synonymous with the beauty gesture that, in 2003, M.A.C created a makeup collection around lashes designed by the Arthur star.
- Back in the 1970s, CHER had her own doll, replete with all of the performer’s trademarks, including a long raven mane of hair, Bob Mackie couture, potato chip–length nails and forehead-sweeping lashes. A costuming staple as constant as her outrageous wigs, Cher’s falsies were the ideal feminine foil for her whip-smart attitude, which usually targeted her unassuming husband on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour.
- The modern infatuation with lashes reached an insane pitch when Jennifer Lopez showed up at the 2001 Academy Awards in red fox-fur falsies. Ever since, everyone from Madonna (in mink on her Re-Invention tour) to KATE BOSWORTH has fastened on some fringe for their red carpet cavalcades.
- Due out this winter, The Good Shepherd is set in the late 1940s and features ANGELINA JOLIE as a CIA operative’s wife who embodies the beauty signals (extended lashes and red lips) of the time. Regardless of your team affiliation (Aniston or Jolie), you can’t deny her classic beauty.
