Listening to tunes in the tub is a classic way to relax, of course. Add a fireplace and a glass of merlot, and things really start to wind down. But the hydrotherapy bath at the new Phresh Spa + Wellness Club (1160 Davie St., 604-662-4462, phreshspa.com) goes one better by playing music through the bathwater itself, causing the tub to vibrate in time with the beat. Developed in Germany, symphonic hydrotherapy, as it’s called, is now being used for all manner of concerns, including joint pain and arthritis.
The 90-minute treatment ($200) starts with a dry-brush exfoliation to bring blood to the skin’s surface and allow products to penetrate. A therapeutic gel infused with spirulina algae is massaged into the skin, then you are wrapped in plastic film on a warm spa bed in front of the fire. Twenty minutes later, you descend into a herbal bath in the hydrotherapy tub, which has magnets embedded in it. A control panel allows you to adjust the mood lighting (chromotherapy): Red and yellow lights are uplifting; blue and purple are calming. With classical music, the tub vibrates gently with the deeper wind instruments and strings. There’s a CD library, or you can bring your own music (even gangsta rap, if you must). After 20 more minutes, you rinse off and return to the bed for a relaxing massage. Now that’s music to our ears.
