What was important in setting your nail bar apart from others? “A lot of it is our atmosphere and our vibe. The manicures are set up at two long tables instead of individual ones, so it’s more social. I also put a lot of attention into staffing, looking for people who are outgoing and hip—just like my target market—but at the same time, their services are impeccable. I also didn’t want it to be too girlie. That’s why my colours are green, orange, and everything’s white, so it’s inviting to men as well. You can also check your e-mail, watch a film and have a cocktail.”

How is business going? “We’re getting pretty well known for our Brazilians. For me, it’s a big deal because it’s such a scary thing to get done, so once you find someone who’s really good you really want to hang on to them. I’ve been really picky about who I have doing it, because I don’t want anyone having a bad experience. All my girls are really confident in what they do, which really sets you at ease. It’s almost magical. Every time someone has one done, I ask, ‘So how was it?’ And she’ll say, ‘Oh my God, I almost fell asleep!’ I’ve heard that five times now.”

Do you audition your aestheticians? “Yes, it’s usually a French pedicure. Frenches are a step above red nail polish; they have to be perfect. I also pay attention to the massage pressure, what my cuticles look like, the order she does things in, and the speed. For waxing, I’ll have them do a Brazilian and an arm wax, because the arm hair grows in all different directions, so it’s a good gauge of what their skills are like. Also, if I’m not in the mood to be talking that day, are they constantly badgering me? Or is it easy and flowing and are we having a conversation about something other than the weather?”

Do you keep your own nails impeccably groomed? “I just keep them buffed. I think it’s important because whenever I go for a manicure, I always look at the aesthetician’s nails and if they can’t keep the dirt out of their own fingernails or have chipped polish, I’m not having it. Some of my girls are really talented and can wear polish and still work with nail polish remover. It’s really impressive.”

What kind of nails are you into right now? “I like short nails in a black plummy colour. Sparitual’s ‘I Feel the Earth Move’ is a good one.”
