Face Time: Yasmin Warsame
FASHION chats with Yasmin Warsame, superstar model and a new judge on Canada’s Next Top Model.
With campaigns for the some of the fashion industry’s heaviest hitters (Hermès, Valentino), and shoots for its coolest magazines (Italian Vogue, FASHION), Yasmin Warsame is one of the most successful Canadian models of all time. On May 30 at 8 p.m. on Citytv, she joins the cast of Canada’s Next Top Model as a judge. FASHION got the scoop.
1 - How did you become involved with Canada's Next Top Model?
I’ve known Jay [Manuel] for a long time. The producers approached my agents and asked if I was interested. I jumped at the chance.
2 - What has been the most challenging part of being a judge on the show?
It's always challenging to remember what it's like to be a new model. The insecurities, the uncertainties, and everyone expecting so much from you can be really overwhelming. It was an incredible experience to help the girls through their first steps and help build their confidence, not only as models, but as people.
3 - Was there anything about your time on the show that surprised you? Something about the contestants, the other judges, yourself?
I’ve known all the judges for quite some time, Jeanne [Beker] is actually a very good friend of mine, so being on the panel with them was like being at home. The biggest surprise for me, however, was the high caliber of the girls! I think viewers will be surprised!
4 - How do you think your experience as a successful model affected your position as judge on the show?
Modelling has opened up so many doors for me. I have met amazing people along the way and I know the girls understand this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
5 - What's one of your favourite memories from your time as a successful model?
I did a campaign with Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel's Allure. Over lunch he said, "What I hate most in life are people who are not really the peach of the day, but who want to be young and sexy. You can fool nobody. There is a moment when you have to accept that somebody else is younger and fresher and hotter. Life is not a beauty contest.” That was classic.
6 - Can you share an anecdote about your experience on Canada's Next Top Model?
Let’s just say this season is going to be amazing! There is lots of excitement, so you’ll have to tune in to find out!
