For curly-haired women, summer inevitably kicks off a season of bad hair (hello, frizzies). Since unruly coils have their own set of challenges, whether it’s cutting or styling, it’s best to seek out the guidance of those who understand how to approach them. That way, you’ll be primed for facing off with the haziest of humid days. Prisma Hair Design (1450 Centre St., Thornhill, 905-886-4196) is Canada’s only salon certified by Ouidad, the famous American curl guru. See owner Mimmo Comande, who trained in New York on the ways of Ouidad’s trademark cutting technique of “carving and slicing,” a method that reduces the volume of each curl so that one sits inside another, as opposed to stacking up like a triangle.
For actual schooling on getting those spirals in control, head to the Curly Hair Institute (85 Sheppard Ave. W., 416-362-1060, frizzoff.com), which not only is a salon—its specialty is the Tunnel Cut, where strategic pieces of hair are removed to reduce bulk—but also offers curl clinics. One of the big lessons? Learning how to control your hair from the moment you step out of the shower. “When hair is wet, it’s totally frizz-free,” says owner Jonathan Torch. “The open cuticles are filled with water, and that weight pulls down excess bulk.” Clients are coached on how to prep their hair—before it’s left to dry on its own—using silicone-free products from Torch’s Curly Hair Solutions. “Once hair’s dried frizz-free,” he explains, “then you can play with it, and then you can be aggressive with it.” In other words, show it who’s boss.

Why is curly hair something that must be tamed? Why can't curls just be allowed to do their thing. I wish the fashion magazines would stop telling us curly-haired girls that there is something wrong with the way we look. Curly hair is beautiful.

There not saying that its wrong, just that theres a way to fix it. Most people prefer to have their hair tamed instead of being all frizzy.
