Spring 2010 scents: The orientals

Exotic spicy notes that are warm, woody and musky.

BEYONCÉ HEAT (from $59, at Shoppers Drug Mart) The Juice: A sexy, fruity, floral, woody scent. The Bottle: Curvaceous, with a sleek square neck. Star Note: Crème de musk, magnolia, red vanilla orchid, blush peach, almond macaroon, honeysuckle, tonka bean and amber. The Perfumers: Claude Dir and Olivier Gillotin. Of Note: This is Beyoncé’s first namesake scent.

DIOR ESCALE À PONDICHÉRY ($66, at the Bay) The Juice: The second scent in the Escales de Dior series, it’s sweet and spicy. The Bottle: Cylindrical clear glass with a chic silver stopper. Star Notes: Black tea, cardamom, jasmine sambac and sandalwood. The Perfumer: François Demachy. Of Note: The inspiration was the blend of French and Tamil cultures in Puducherry—the territory was a French colony for nearly 300 years before joining India.

HALLE BY HALLE BERRY PURE ORCHID ($35, at drugstores) The Juice: A purple juice that smells like lush flowers and warm wood. The Bottle: Rectangular-shaped glass with hammered silver around the neck. Star Notes: Masdevallia orchid, jungle cactus flower, lemon, papaya, blackberry crème, patchouli and tonka bean. The Perfumers: Rodrigo Flores-Roux and Christophe Raynaud. Of Note: This is Halle Berry’s second fragrance.

HALSTON WOMAN (from $60, at the Bay) The Juice: A softly spicy mix of heady flowers and dry wood. The Bottle: The curvaceous, ergonomic shape of the original Halston bottle. Star Notes: Precious roses, Sicilian bergamot, marigold, blackcurrant, jasmine petals, patchouli, sandalwood and amber. The Perfumer: Carlos Benaim. Of Note: Jewellery designer Elsa Peretti created the first Halston bottle in 1975.

JO MALONE THE KOHDO WOOD COLLECTION IN LOTUS BLOSSOM & WATER LILY, DARK AMBER & GINGER LILY (from $70, at Holt Renfrew) The Juice: These complementary scents are flowery, sweet, warm and exotic. The Bottle: Jo Malone’s signature chunky rectangular glass with a metal topper. Star Notes: Bergamot, freesia, honeysuckle, sandalwood; water lily, pink pepper, leather, patchouli and kyara incense. The Perfumer: Andrea Lupo. Of Note: The fragrance names were inspired by the ancient Japanese art of incense appreciation.
