Montreal Notes: General 54

Shop local designers’ wares at Local 23’s sister store.

There was some head-scratching going on when General 54 (54 St-Viateur St. W., 514-271-2129) opened its doors just a few blocks south of its sister store, Local 23. Why so close? Maybe it was the rock-bottom rent or the delectable coffee up the street. Turns out it was the talent. “We created our first store to support neighbourhood designers,” explains co-owner and designer Jennifer Glasgow. “When the first store became too small, we just had to open a second.” With over 45 local designers to choose from, students and young professionals alike are going gaga for Soi Disant’s Palestinian embroidered designs, Fauna’s time-travelling shapes, which mix the modern with a little bit of 1940s flair, and Glasgow’s own in-store line (tunic shown, $200).
