Red lips had a runway monopoly again this season.

Spring was clearly just a warm-up for fall, because red lipstick monopolized even more mouths—makeup artists refused to release this strong, daring statement from their clutches. Pat McGrath and Tom Pecheux enthusiastically painted lips crimson at D&G and Yves Saint Laurent, respectively, and paired them with perfectly polished skin. “Our generation has been brought up on a beauty of Kate Moss minimalism, so we haven’t had a chance to indulge in it,” opines Aaron De Mey, artistic director for Lancôme Makeup. “It’s become a very acceptable and elegant way of wearing makeup. It’s a way to be fashionable, anti-fashion, desirable, pretty and sexy, all at the same time.” At L’Wren Scott, De Mey applied his red imperfectly to “give it modernity.” He smudged it into the lips like a stain, then wiped off any excess from the edges.
