As we surface from gloomy months of hibernation and bid farewell to frigid nights that begin at 5 p.m., we look to spring for a much-needed return to colour. This season, we seem to require that jolt of optimism more than ever. Playing off the diaphanous fabrics and silhouettes in many of the collections, and underscoring an upbeat, positive outlook, eyes were awash in delicate, succulent shades. But “there’s zero reference to retro,” says Melissa Gibson, senior artist for M.A.C. “This has nothing to do with the ’70s or ’80s feel. It’s very diffused and watercolour-like. It’s modern, youthful, and there’s a sense of playfulness.” High on the popularity list was lavender, shown at Versace and Michael Kors, but baby blue, soft coral and mint green also made appearances—sometimes all at once (as seen at Derek Lam).

Read on to see more structured waves on the runway, and what you need to get the look.
