The season’s “need for optimism” also necessitates confidence. Leaving behind the classic crimson mouth from the past few seasons, makeup artists dipped into bold, cheery hues of saturated orange. “It’s a happy and energetic colour,” says Gibson. “After the dark period of the past year, it’s like the sun just came out.” Often worn on otherwise bare faces, he says this season’s take on the shade was “clear and bright, not muted or muddy.” At Prada and Sonia Rykiel, the shade was custom-mixed by Pat McGrath and Sharon Dowsett, respectively, and topped with gloss so that it glimmered like patent. At Giambattista Valli, Lisa Butler also played mixmaster, creating a colour inspired by Picasso’s final period of paintings.
