Under-eye solutions: Puffiness

Puffy eyes typically look worse in the morning because fluid accumulates in the space below the eyes when you lie down overnight, compounding that I’ve-been-up-partying-all-night appearance. As the day progresses, the fluid drains and the puffiness goes down.

As you age, the tissue around the eyes and some of the muscles holding up the eyelids weaken. The fat that helps support the eyes slips down into the lower eyelids, causing them to appear puffy and droopy. “The skin becomes looser,” explains Dr. Martie Gidon, a Toronto-based cosmetic dermatologist. “It’s almost as if you have a balloon that’s blown up, and you’ve let some of the air out.” A poor diet, too much alcohol, lack of sleep, allergies and dermatitis are also potential contributors.
