Under-eye solutions: Concealer

These makeup options provide a quick under-eye fix.

Even a dermatologist will tell you that when you need a quick fix, there’s always makeup. Not just for spots, concealers provide under-eye coverage for every complexion. “I usually put foundation all over—under the eye, everywhere,” explains Susana Hong, a Toronto-based makeup artist. “Then I apply an ever-so-slightly-darker colour under the eye area, or wherever it’s puffy. Where the under-eye dents in, I use a highlighting stick. Where it’s receding, you want to bring it out, and where it’s puffing out, you want it to recede.”

To remedy an extreme pigment situation, call in the big guns. “The fastest cure for dark circles is to apply a corrector,” says Greg Wencel, Cover Girl makeup artist. “Counteract the blue of under-eyes by applying corrector directly to dark circles, then finish with concealer.” Apply concealer around the eyes and on the lids, and blend it in with your fingers. “Set it with a light dusting of powder so it stays put,” says Wencel. Of course, none of this will help if your concealer is too light. “It will actually enhance blue circles and make a reverse raccoon effect.” Take the time to find the right concealer: Test it in natural light, applying it over your foundation. “If you can’t see the concealer after you’ve applied it, you’ve chosen the right shade.”
