Art + fashion: Alejandro Cardenas for Proenza Schouler
Cardenas has worked with the design pair since they were fresh out of Parsons.
As long as there has been Proenza Schouler, there has been Alejandro Cardenas, art-directing.
He began by designing a logo for the label, back when Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez were his pals, fresh out of Parsons, and not the minor fashion-cult gods they are now. And, in a way, you could argue that logo-making is what the 32-year-old still does at Proenza. Literal logos are long passé—the new emblems of luxury are signature prints and arty motifs familiar only to those in the know, and Cardenas makes some of those most worth knowing. How many of you saw the embroidery and prints inspired by tropical fish of Spring 2010, perhaps Proenza’s best collection yet, and instantly dove for your wallet? Blame this guy.
