Backstage beauty: Character building
How hair and makeup pros turn inspiration into stunning—and sometimes out there—runway looks.
It's at least four hours before Marc Jacobs shows his Fall 2010 collection in New York. Backstage, a scrum of beauty editors are jockeying for space in the cramped quarters, waiting for the usually reclusive makeup artist François Nars to come over. We loiter patiently, and when he’s finally able to pull away from his team, everyone shoves their recording devices as close to him as they can to capture his precious words. The show’s look—which Nars says includes worn-off liner, clumpy mascara, a pallid complexion and faded coral lips—provides a narrative for the models. In this instance, they’re portraying a cool girl from the East Village who was out the night before and slept in her makeup.
