We once considered a deep tan a beauty extravagance—the notion of being able to fritter away time in the sun. But this season, makeup artists declared a tan (and all it implies) as cheap as a Hollywood heiress. Instead, the new ideal is “intelligent bronzing,” explains Gordon Espinet, M.A.C’s executive director of makeup artistry. Maintain a cautious, natural look, and “focus on texture—it’s not real matte, and it’s not real dewy,” says Espinet. Create the appearance of a stolen hour, as opposed to a week of overindulgence.
