This month, Laura Keogh talks about YSL Beauté’s 30 years of cosmetic history with Val Garland.
Makeup trends can feel very transient. Collections change seasonally, products become obsolete and colours fade into obscurity. We women can be endlessly fickle with the items we favour. Why does that feel so surprising to me, since I can so callously break up with a foundation that I noodled over and spent more on than my new Me & Ro bracelet? Our favourite brands can feel like old friends, who have just always been around. Maybe it’s less about the shade or the coverage of a certain product than the personality of the brand. So when I heard about the 30th anniversary of Yves Saint Laurent makeup, which is particularly significant due to Mr. Saint Laurent’s recent passing, I was struck with conflicting feelings: How could I possibly be older (just by a touch, mind you) than this line? And could it actually be true that it has only been around for a scant three decades? With these questions in mind, I decided to talk to Val Garland, Yves Saint Laurent Beauté’s artistic advisor, about the significance of the brand’s birthday, and its iconic products of the past, present and future.
