"The ’70s and ’80s were such beautiful aesthetic periods,” says makeup artist Mathew Nigara about the eras that are his present source of inspiration. But since my makeup arsenal in the ’70s primarily consisted of Bonne Bell lip balms, which I am ashamed to say I ate once, it’s Nigara’s ’80s references of Scarface and Eyes of Laura Mars that I relate to most—making the contoured blush off the runways a welcome curveball for my routine. Nigara put together the look for the “very strong and hip” woman that Diane von Furstenberg referenced in her fall presentation, using a “cream blush on the apple, then a powder that is layered on top and blended upward toward the cheekbone.” It’s not too ’80s and “gives the appearance of a contour, without the edge.”
