As an intern at the Montreal office, I have become the unofficial guinea pig for beauty products. Our experiments don’t always go as planned—I’ve gone home more than once with a single streaky spray-tanned arm and smelling like unsavoury lotion.

The winter months tend to do a number on my hair. It’s lacklustre, sucked dry of moisture and, to top it off, dull. The only technique that really helps is using a weekly hair mask. But even though it works fantastically, the process is time-consuming since the mask needs to absorb into your hair for the best results.

I just got back from sitting in the chair of makeup guru Joseph Costa of YSL Beauté and I must say it was the most fun I’ve had in forever! I’m the kind of girl who’ll try anything once, so when Costa started to smear the gorgeous products from the new Soleil D’Afrique collection (at Holt Renfew) onto my hand, I insisted he put them on my winter-pale face instead.

The first beauty products I ever spent my hard-earned $2-an-hour babysitting money on were Finesse Extra Body Shampoo and Conditioner. I was 13 years old, swimming twice a day for the Calgary Aquabelles. Washing my fine, thin, stick-to-my-scalp blonde hair meant more to me than just getting it clean: I was trying to rinse the chlorine smell out and scrub a little feel-good beauty in. My teammate Michelle used Finesse. She had beautifully thick, naturally wavy, blonde hair. I coveted it - and her shampoo. Finesse made me feel like I had half a chance at being pretty.

With my trend-spotting radar on, I hit the streets in search of the latest looks in beauty and this spring, it’s all about colour.  From bright pink to purple and blue, the hottest makeup colours are inspired by rich, saturated garden hues. The key to wearing these bright colours is to enhance a single feature, like your eyes or lips.

Being that Sephora is my ultimate beauty haven, I was incredibly excited to attend a private event at their new Bloor Street location on February 27 with a $100 gift certificate in hand to use as my little heart desired. With six new locations opening by Summer 2008, there’s a lot to get excited about.

Cameron Diaz dazzled at the 80th annual Academy Awards® in a strapless, pale pink Dior by John Galliano gown, and boasted a flawless complexion, thanks to celebrity makeup artist Gucci Westman, who used the limited-edition Dior Flower Blossom palette to create Diaz’s fresh spring look.

Kiehl’s Lip Gloss in “French Rose”

Kiehl’s Lip Gloss in “French Rose”

As a beauty writer, I always try to steer clear of the typical clichés that litter beauty reporting. You’ll never hear me say anything like “pretty pout” or “pretty peepers” when describing a new lipstick or eyeshadow’s effect. I cringe when I read those kinds of descriptions. However, it makes reporting on the lovely little things that flood the market for Valentine’s Day (a holiday saddled with clichés) really difficult. But I’m going to do my best with the Kiehl’s Valentine’s Day offering because it is, well, pretty.
