Charlottetown: Green Man is the new black
I love vintage. It’s economical, environmentally friendly and the best way to find a unique piece to wear somewhere special. For me, the best thing about vintage shopping is digging for hours and leaving a store with an amazing find that will make my friends jealous. So when The Green Man Vintage and Vinyl (48 University Ave., 902-566-1361) opened its doors last fall, I was thrilled that the store was everything that vintage shopping is supposed to be—and more.
First, there is the decor. The brightly coloured walls are plastered with hard-to-find records, while the store windows are decorated with impeccably put-together mannequins. The racks of clothes are awash with tartan, short dresses á la Twiggy and vintage lace that are not only valuable survivors of previous decades but are spot on trends for Fall 2008. The helpful owners, Kelly Casely and Roger Carter, are always putting new goodies out on the floor, and talking fashion and music with the hordes of chic locals who practically live in their store.
The pair have also begun to carry original island clothing lines: Kinza Mae, Sunsets on the East Side, and Casely’s own By Kelly (which I adore). The two have also spearheaded several fashion shows and have more plans in the works. Clearly, The Green Man is at the heart of Prince Edward Island’s fashion scene and more than worth a look.
