Toronto: A gadabout's guide to vintage

Toronto: A gadabout's guide to vintage

Odd Gems by Connie Ng

With one of the most comprehensive selections of vintage purses in the city, Gadabout (1300 Queen St. E., 416-463-1254, gadabout.ca) is a household name among friends who I am convinced are members of Purseoholics Anonymous.

Toronto: Sunday at the market

Odd Gems by Connie Ng

There is nothing like a lazy day at the market. Be it for flowers or meat, as long as I have a fresh cappuccino in hand, I have the best time simply browsing for hours. Among my favorites is a name often overlooked by locals, the Sunday Antique Market (North Market, St. Lawrence Market Complex, 92 Front St. E., 416-392-7120).

Odd Gems by Connie Ng

With a stir of rebels and rivals, a pinch of angst, romance and graduation anxiety, cinematic high-school drama never fails deliver. My coming-of-age retrospective is consumed with the fashion in juicy teen classics like Dazed and Confused, The Breakfast Club, Clueless and the cream of the crop, Grease.

Attention chocoholics: MoRoCo Chocolat (99 Yorkville Ave., 416-961-2202, morocochocolat.com), possibly the most fashionable chocolate salon in Toronto, opened this fall. The location is quite hidden, but even if you miss their giant Victorian logo that reads “Let Them Eat Cacao,” your nose will lead the way like a GPS.

Toronto: The ROM sparkles

Odd Gems by Connie Ng

The ROM has been upping its fashion cred lately. First was this month’s showing of one of Marie-Antoinette's original court gowns—part of the Out of the Vaults series—complemented by a screening of Sofia Coppola’s biopic, which juxtaposed pounding ’80s music with pale, ivory satin dresses with lavish embroidery, ribbons and bows.

Toronto: Art and the city

Odd Gems by Connie Ng

On October 4, Toronto hosted its third annual Nuit Blanche.  Over a million people gathered for this all-night, after-dark adventure and discovered a city invaded by artists. Art of every medium, in every corner, illuminated the city with excitement, mystique and beauty. The event was an opportunity to seize a brief moment to connect with each other and our environment.

Toronto: Swapping for one-of-a-kind finds

Toronto: Swapping for one-of-a-kind finds

Odd Gems by Connie Ng

The thrill of hunting for one-of-a-kind gems is only part of the allure of vintage shopping. When we source style inspiration in reclaimed garments, our ecological footprint is reduced and as an eco-conscious country, many Canadians wear vintage pieces as if they were badges of honor. Stop any Toronto trendster on the street and ask what they are wearing, chances are they will snobbishly respond, “It’s vintage.” It’s most adorable!

Odd Gems by Connie Ng

Venturing off to the Beach to bid farewell to summer, the highlights of this season finale exceeded the beach breezes and happy pedestrians as I contentedly returned home loaded with bling. Between ice cream and biking along the shore, I stumbled upon Ends (1930 Queen St. E., 416-699-2271, endsclothing.com), and my search for the perfect gold chain was finally at an end.

Canada's most anticipated music event, the Virgin Festival took place on Toronto Island over the weekend. Against the backdrop of the city skyline and the scent of lake water was a sea of nodding heads, swaying arms and screaming fans leaping across blankets of mud and grass.
