Celebrating one year of Blo

Celebrating one year of Blo

Posted on August 22, 2008

I apologize for being a little AWOL lately, but between all the fall fashion previews and trunk shows, there have been backyard barbecues, evenings at the beach (neither of which are good excuses, I know, but who doesn’t love the Celebration of Lights fireworks?), and of course, trips to the Islands, the Okanagan, and, next week, New York!

Nevertheless, last week’s first anniversary party for Blo Blow Dry Bar (blomedry.com)—already a Vancouver institution—was a fantastic way to celebrate the end of summer. Held across the street from Blo’s first and original Yaletown location on Hamilton Street, the event featured a silent auction of clothing by local fashion designers such as Obakki, Narcissist, JC Studio, and Chloë Angus. The pieces were either one-of-a-kind runway items or had been created specifically for the event, inspired by one of Blo’s signature hairstyles (which have fun names like the super-straight “Executive Sweet,” “Hidden Assets”—extensions, of course—and “Bardot Updo”).

Mavi tees featuring “I Heart Blo” or gangsta hand symbols spelling “blo” were also sold, and semi-nude performance artist Brent Ray Fraser (brentrayfraser.com) created a “Naughty or Nice” masterpiece as guests looked on, sipping mojitos and pink drinks.

And that’s not all: proceeds from the auction and t-shirt sales, a total of almost $6,000, went to the BC Cancer Foundation. It all just goes to show that even one of the summer’s biggest parties can go toward a good cause.
