So Happy at Holts
Posted on May 14, 2008
Last year, there was the grand opening of the new Vancouver Holt Renfrew flagship—where, along with plenty of other fawning fans, I caught a glimpse of Marcia Cross, Zooey Deschanel and 90210’s Kathleen Robertson (who, 12 months ago, was already rocking a crown of braids).

The New, New West
Posted on May 5, 2008
There are the fabulous events (finally, a chance to wear that green 3.1 Phillip Lim dress with rosettes!) and the once-in-a-lifetime designer interview opportunities (last year’s roster included Robert Rodriguez, the boys behind Badgley Mischka, and jewellery magnate Kenneth Jay Lane), but perhaps the thing I’m most excited about as I step into my new role as FASHION’s Western editor is the opportunity to report on the rapidly-changing fashion scene on the West Coast.

Deafened by persistent rumours that Chanel, Vuitton and other luxe labels are scouting for the perfect locations from which to provide Albertans with their divine indulgences—and flummoxed by the fact Calgary got Sephora and H&M before Vancouver—I recently hopped a WestJet flight and made my way to Calgary for 48 hours of investigative journalism.

Fashion parties always trickle to a minimum under the August sunshine, but by the first week of September, the bulk of the style community has happily bid sayonara to its summer threads and is eagerly embarking on the important mission of building a new autumn wardrobe. At Christmas, Toronto’s Bloor Street Holt Renfrew looks spectacular, its windows glittering with holiday frou frou and its racks dripping with effervescent frocks. I only mention it because last week, as I was strolling by the picture panes of our paint-barely-dry Dunsmuir Street location, it occurred to me that we’re probably in for a treat this year.
