I’ve got too much on the go and I’m feeling the stress. A more informal spa experience is what I’m after. As I make my way to the change rooms, pick a locker and slip on a robe, I am grateful to not have someone hovering over me—it would only add to the pressure. And right now, sitting in a pre-reclined chair in the spa’s informal environment, while sipping a glass of lemonade and listening to the twangy sounds of an Asian-inspired CD are all I need. At least that’s what I think until I’m face down on a table in Nadine’s treatment room for an hour long Chocolate Bliss Mud Wrap ($140). Read more »

I’ve been here 100 times before. It’s not fancy, the spa is underground, there’s nothing special about the décor and you have to pour your own complimentary herbal tea. Sometimes, you can even hear the rumble of the subway. But it’s my comfort zone. And my ritual goes like this: Read more »

Spa of the month: Spirit Urban Spa, Halifax

From the West Coast to the Atlantic Ocean, Beauty Director Adriana Ermter scours the nation for must-try rejuvenating, relaxing and beautifying spas. This month, she sends Nadine LaRoche to check out Spirit Urban Spa in Halifax.

As my aesthetician Allison lifts my head from the table, I feel all weight release from my body. I’m half way through the one-hour Sweet Skin Organic Facial ($90), which is customized for your skin type, waiting for my strawberry rhubarb mask to hydrate and replenish my skin and Allison has taken the opportunity to massage apricot oil into my scalp. We share some pillow talk with Naomi Campbell…kind of

Pillow talk is my favourite. Especially when it includes Carré Otis and Naomi Campbell. No, I have not actually shared face-to-face confessionals with either of these former Guess models, but I did experience the next best thing: sitting on their silk screened portraits while attending the Guess by Marciano Spring/Summer 2011 runway show Read more »

The daily steal: Foundation faker, $36

Not only do I not like a face thick with foundation, I do not appreciate the sun’s wrinkle-inducing effects. Benefit Some Kind-a Gorgeous Lite (at Shoppers Drug Mart) has both problems covered. With a couple of swipes of this foundation faker I have sheer, light-coloured and even coverage, while the titatium dioxide in the formula offers a hit of sun protection. At $36, it’s cheaper than a facial and lasts longer than your average boyfriend.

The neon lighting of the lobby at the Pantages Hotel is a far cry from the quiet, calm atmosphere of the Shizen Spa on the fifth floor. I slip on a robe before being guided to the room where I’m set to enjoy the spa’s signature service: a 70-minute Rose Wrap ($140). Read more »

Yup, the skincare gurus at Dermalogica have done it again with this five-part grime, oil, and greasy-residue removing kit ($46, cleanstart.dermalogica.ca). It comes complete with a face wash, scrub, toner, spot treatment and SPF-infused moisturizer and fits neatly inside your carry-on.

I have no self-control: Essie’s Fall 2010 nail polish collection ($10 each, essie.com) has landed on my desk and even though I know it’s amazing range of chocolate brown, grey violet and velvet purple hues won’t be available until the beginning of September, I have to talk about it. Right. Now. Especially about the smoky grey sage-green nail lacquer called “Sew Psyched.” It’s awesome. It looks so phenomenal that I haven’t even touched the pewter shades I’ve recently been favouring. Seriously. With must-wear cool equivalent to that of a pair of William Rast army fatigues, this polish has a lust-factor that’s worth waiting for.
