Bigger is always better, especially when it comes to your hair. Matrix Design Pulse Go Big Extra Strong Hold Mousse ($17, 888-422-6879) takes me to Texas heights–should that be my M.O.–and keeps me there. Its formulation is lightweight, perfect for my thin and fine hair and it doesn’t have that gross sticky, goopy after-effect.

Beauty pick: Caryl Baker’s line-filling glosses
Sometimes all the makeup I want to wear is a sheer, natural-coloured lipgloss. Caryl Baker Visage The Lip Lift Gloss ($19 each, carylbakervisage.com) comes in three paraben-free shades for summer—a shimmery peach “Wish,” a matte coral pink “In the Sun,” and a sparkling bronze “On the Beach.” Not only does the gloss not feel sticky, its formulation is infused with filling spheres to smooth out fine line and it makes lips feel super soft.

Spa of the month: Willow Stream Spa, Vancouver
From the West Coast to the Atlantic Ocean, beauty director Adriana Ermter scours the nation for must-try rejuvenating, relaxing and beautifying spas.
Willow Stream Spa, Vancouver
Fairmont Pacific Rim, 1038 Canada Place, 604-695-5550, fairmont.com/pacificrim
In dire need of a facial, a pedicure and relaxation, I head to the spa. I start off in the steam room, which, unlike most, is filled with natural light streaming in through the frosted glass windows overlooking Coal Harbour. Already beginning to feel the day-to-day pressures melting away, I slip on a robe and head to the lounge to sip orange-infused water and nibble on a bran muffin. Read more »

Our beauty director gets a new job (sort of): men’s hairstylist
I have a new job: hairdresser. I’m shaving my husband’s head with the Wahl Signature Series/Charge Pro Clipper Kit ($60) and his beard with the Wahl Lithium Ion Rechargeable Trimmer ($60, both at Sears and Canadian Tire). No, I’m not nuts, just cheap. His haircuts/shaves cost $20 a pop. Sure, it’s peanuts compared to highlights, cut and a blowout. But he goes to the barber: Every. Single. Week. I did the math. Toronto: Taking girls’ night in out to the salon
The beauty pros at Toronto’s Tony Chaar Salon (11 Hazelton Ave., 416-920-9965, tonychaarsalon.com) and Schwarzkopf Professional (schwarzkopf-professional.ca) must know that I have had zero personal time lately, because they organized a personalized Girls’ Night In at the hair salon. It was incredible. Between clinking glasses with my six A-list friends (a television host, PR expert, multimedia producer, teacher, freelance book editor and my favourite eight-year-old), dropping M&Ms and Smarties into my mouth at regular intervals, I caught up on all of the important girl gossip and got beautified. The daily steal: Room fragrance, $16
Sometimes a fresh breeze is hard to come by. I’ve resorted to zipping around the house spritzing Crabtree & Evelyn Carleon Cove Home Fragrance Spray ($16, crabtree-evelyn.com). And it works: Each light misting proffers a lovely, airy, leafy scent with a hint of violet and sandalwood. Beats spring cleaning any day!

The daily steal: Rosemary body care, from $22
Sometimes a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do, which is why I immediately tossed Dr. Hauschka’s Rosemary Bath ($31) and Rosemary Foot Balm ($22, both at spas) into my purse to take home. Both do double-duty as body massage products, they’re cheaper than going to an RMT, they promote increased circulation, and they even pass my colleague’s militant green-beauty test, so can be safely used all over.
