For many men, shopping is not exactly at the top of a to-do list, so when it comes to buying a gift for the man in your life, take the opportunity to sprinkle some style his way. My suggestion, check out the sleek and funky designs of Braithwaite Wallets (braithwaitewallets.com), created by designers Nick Stratichuk and founder Connor Ferster. Read more »

Calgary: Smyth & Kang becomes a haven for homegrown fashion

If you’ve been counting your fashionable pennies these days, you’re not alone.  I too have been weighing purchases before taking the plunge, neatly stowing away my impulsive self until this ghastly recession comes to a screeching halt. Ummm…when is that going to happen again? For me, going low budget doesn’t mean shunning designer wear altogether.  In fact, I’ve decided to take a long-term view and avoid the bargain that never gets worn and invest in some workhorse pieces.

So, no better time for Calgary’s latest fashion duo, Leon Kang and Aly Velji to transform their cutting-edge boutique Smyth & Kang (610 1st St. S.W., 403-617-2406, smythandkang.com). And we’re not talking a simple facelift. Read more »

Calgary: Strike a (yoga) pose in Cocymela

Blue top, $50; Orange tank, $35; shorts, $40, all by Cocymela. Chris Schoenne Photography

Yoga fashion is a bit of an oxymoron. It seems so ridiculous to be concerned about outer appearance while working on inner change and enlightenment, doesn’t it?  Classes are meant to be serene pools of space and time where students can relax into the present, but this is easier said than done when your pants are riding where the sun don’t shine during a salutation. Calgary: Sister act

I grew up with two older brothers and with that came the art of making throwing stars out of soup cans lids and learning to withstand the torture of a good old fashioned snake bite (the arm-twisting kind).  As much as I love my big bros, I was like every little girl in my position–I longed for a sister.  Someone to braid my hair, puffy paint my clothes and a sibling who would appreciate my deep-seated crush on Uncle Jessie.  But, above all, I wanted a sister to share my shoe fetish.

When sisters Jennifer and Laura Ripley open Luna Blue (2611 14 St. SW, 403-244-1644, lunablueshoes.com) this past September, it came together organically.  With thriving careers—Jennifer working for the Military Family Resource Centre and Laura as a nurse–they both felt the need to shake things up and pursue their common passion for shoes.  Read more »

It’s pretty easy to cruise though life, flying under the radar and going about your fashionable business.  But, for Calgary-based designer Leo Casuga Jr., that simply isn’t an option.  After slogging it out in the financial world for several years, Casuga decided to listen to his gut and jump ship to pursue a life in design.

Calgary: Domestic Diva

Comments

may09jubilee_lg1

There’s nothing I love more than throwing a dinner party.  I fully admit, I have an inner Martha stirring inside of me, just dying to serve up elegant hors d’oeuvres and lavish spreads to guests sidling up to homemade place cards.  I’m pretty sure I get this burning desire to entertain from my mother.

So, you can just imagine my domestic delight when I stumbled upon the Kitsch’n Glam (kitchenglam.com) collection at I Appeal (634A 17 Avenue SW, 403-271-3696 and 1109B Kensington Rd NW, 403-270-3611). These retro-whimsical aprons ($42 for the halter style), give a sexy and fashionable twist to an age-old kitchen accessories.  Who says glamour isn’t for the kitchen?  Read more »

Comments

apr09lililime_lg2

I have spring fever. Bad. In fact, I’m pretty sure this might be a nation wide epidemic. But, after a seemingly endless Calgary winter, it appears as though spring may have finally appeared. (I write this with cautious optimism and instantly look for a piece of wood–I don’t dare temp fate.) Read more »
