Vancouver: Designers on Designers

For my last entry as a FASHION reporter, I couldn’t think of a story that captures the spirit of the Vancouver fashion industry better than this one. It’s the brainchild of photographer Darryl Humphrey (darrylhumphrey.com), who, during his time in the trade, has worked with some of the city’s finest local designers. Humphrey began to notice that, in passing, they would often comment on each other’s work and speak with the highest of respect for one another. In a world where mass-produced goods proliferate, it is often hard to find truly unique items made the artisanal way–by hand. Except for one weekend of the year, that is. The One of a Kind Show (October 8 to 11, Vancouver Convention Centre, oneofakindvancouver.com) has recently announced that they will once again bring one Canada’s most extraordinary shopping events to Vancouver. Vancouver: Window shopping at Front & Company

If the hasty pedestrians who hurriedly make their way across town lift their heads for an instant, it is usually to glance at the outstanding displays they have come to expect in the windows of Holt Renfrew, the Bay, BCBG MaxAzria and Aritzia. It has become a part of our routine, the curiosity and excitement of being transported, if only momentarily, to some imagined place.

However, if you wish to witness something truly unique, I suggest you travel slightly off the beaten path to the fantastic place that exists behind the window panes at Front & Company (3772 Main St., 604-879-8431, frontandcompany.ca). Read more »

A few Fridays a year art enthusiasts from across the city gather at the Vancouver Art Gallery for a cultural gathering known as Fuse—an evening that celebrates music, performance, fine art, and all around entertainment. The most recent incarnation of Fuse, which took place just last week, coincided with the opening of some of the Vancouver Art Gallery’s summer exhibitions, including the works of Anthony Hernandez, Andreas Gursky and Stan Douglas. This week I want give out a little link love to my fellow fashion bloggers in Vancouver.  This city really has a great little community of fashion bloggers that I am proud to be a part of. The camaraderie between everyone is very commendable, and it’s clear that everyone shares a common goal: to highlight the best of Vancouver.

Vancouver: The smell of NYC

Vanilla Bath Foam from Sabon

Vanilla Bath Foam from Sabon

I visited New York for the first time last week, and the bounty of boutiques and shops for every taste really blew me away. It really is endless.

When I compare New York and Vancouver, I question which of these two places I prefer. In New York, the world is at a fashionista’s fingertips. The variety of styles available is incredibly exciting. But then I wonder what there is to look forward to in the world, if you already have it all. In that respect, being in New York gave me a greater sense of fondness and appreciation for Vancouver’s boutiques. Their rarity makes them that much more special.
