Ones to watch: Helena Fredriksson

Another day, another eco-friendly clothing line. The realm of the environmentally friendly, organic cotton using designer is an overcrowded one, beginning to look more like a scene in Soylent Green than anything else. Snide exaggerations aside, with every “But it’s organic!” that we hear, sometimes organic isn’t enough. Another shtick is necessary to get more than the now-inevitable “What else is new?”

That’s why we’ve recently turned our heads to the Swedish designer Helena Fredriksson of H Fredriksson. While “all garments are created with minimum waste in mind” from sustainable materials like organic merino, organic cotton and different reclaimed fabrics, as she tells us via email, this Brooklyn dweller’s line is very wearable stuff. Think ample draping with a laidback cosmopolitan vibe.

“The idea for this collection is to create pieces that reflect and enhance movement,” she says. “The form and draping creates a subtle drama that draws the eye without being loud.”

Indeed, it’s the quiet, understated quality of pieces like the tweed batwing coat and the envelope cardigan–both items that Fredriksson admits will be in heavy rotation for her this fall–that make H Fredriksson stand out in the enviro crowd.

Yes, our foremost interest in TIFF is style (see some of our favourite moments), but we attended enough premieres and parties to have more than a few brushes with celebrity. TIFF party talk: (Musical) celeb-spotting at the Roosevelt Room

One of our favourite spots for celeb-spotting at this year’s TIFF was the Roosevelt Room. For the fest, the Adelaide St. club, Rock-it Promotions and Arts & Crafts Records put on a three-night music festival showcasing some of Canada’s happening-est artists. The point was to invite visiting VIPs of the TV and movie biz to peruse Canadian music and to maybe, just maybe use some of their music in upcoming films. Consider it an audition.

We saw Stars and Basia Bulat on Monday night and we’re still kicking ourselves for checking out another rooftop party prior to the Roosevelt, thus missing one of our favourite, impossible-to-catch-live artists Coeur de Pirate.

While we were busy seeing Abigail Breslin sing at the Horseshoe on Tuesday night, that same evening, City and Colour, Hawksley Workman and Tokyo Police Club played the showcase. Wednesday night saw Toronto band Born Ruffians, Beast, Zeus and the Tragically Hip lead singer Gord Downie perform. While the Roosevelt Room doesn’t often play host to such gigs, the hors d’oeuvres floating around the room were a nice touch–something that would never fly at the city’s dingier watering holes. Leslie Feist was there on Monday, and on Wednesday I spied Jian Ghomeshi, Strombo, Natalie Brown (who has just been everywhere this week) and even Nikita‘s Shane West out of the corner of my eye.

On top of the music showcase, the Roosevelt Room also played host to a handful of film parties, which saw M.I.A., Edward Norton, Robert De Niro and Milla Jovovich stopping by.

Take a peek inside Swarovski’s TIFF fashion suite

Comments

Every year at the film festival, Swarovski hosts a gifting and lending suite where talent can come in, take a look around and borrow some ice for the red carpet. This year, the items in the lounge from the fall collection had a distinct ice queen feel to them – think Anne Hathaway as the white queen in Alice in Wonderland, or better yet, Tilda Swinton as the White Witch in The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. Life’s not fair: A guide to TIFF swag lounges and the celebrities who love them

Comments

Catherine Deneuve poses with a charicature of herself at the Sharpie booth in the IT Lounge.

What most elementary school teachers don’t teach their kids is that the word “gift” can also be a verb. To gift, or gifting is a major part of TIFF, where if you’re an A-lister (or even a B-lister) you’ll get spoiled and pampered just for being you. Brands want celebrities to be seen with their products and are showering them with everything from jeans to jewellery to children’s books. Now that the festival is in its homestretch, we’re breaking down the who’s who of giving and getting. And yes we know, it’s just not fair.

Q&A: Adrian Grenier talks creating a monster with Teenage Paparazzo, becoming a pap, and life on Entourage

We know him best as Vinny Chase, the doe-eyed lead from HBO’s Entourage. But recently, Adrian Grenier added something new to the equation as a documentary film maker. It started when he was dealing with the paparazzi–a part of daily life for him in LA–when he noticed one of the shutterbugs was surprisingly young. As in, 13-years-old and still young enough to look cute in a Justin Bieber haircut. Austin Visschedyk, the pre-pubescent who realized he could make a whole lot more cash staying out til 4 a.m. snapping pics of Paris and Lindsay than, say, keeping a paper route. He would become the subject of Grenier’s intrigue and his next film, Teenage Paparazzo. We had a chance to chat with Grenier about making the kid famous, his own relationship with the paps, and, because we couldn’t resist, we talked Entourage.

On making the kid famous: “Well, yeah, I didn’t expect it, but I guess on some level, I guess I was teaching–or at least learning from myself and at the same time trying to teach him how best to be famous. If you’re going to be famous, do it the right way, with grace and humbleness and self-reflection, and don’t take it for granted.” Read more »

Video: Little Miss Sunshine Abigal Breslin sings at Janie Jones party at Horseshoe Tavern

Comments

After trolling through the Yorkville and King West neighbourhoods, it was a delightful refresher to attend a party at a venue I actually enjoy. Last night at the Horseshoe Tavern, the folks from the film Janie Jones had themselves a little soiree, where cast member Abigail Breslin even got up on stage. Read more »
