They said/We said: Derek Lam out at Tod’s, and Galliano in? Let the guessing games begin!

Comments

Photography by Peter Stigter

Our heads are beginning to spin a bit from all the news, rumours and speculation of designers changing their fashion house posts. (Seriously, can we all just decide on a 2012 Trade Deadline?)

It was reported yesterday and confirmed today that much-loved designer Derek Lam would be leaving his post as Tod’s creative director. And while we love Lam’s shoes and accessories, we’re not all that disappointed—relinquishing Tod’s might just give him more time to concentrate on his acclaimed namesake line, or expand his diffusion line, 10 Crosby.

But a WWD interview with Tod’s chairman Diego Della Valle is causing an even bigger stir (sorry, Derek) for its seemingly off-hand comment about John Galliano being linked to the house. “Lam’s departure coincides with continued speculation that John Galliano was in talks with the Italian firm to either do a Tod’s capsule collection or revamp its Schiaparelli brand. However, Della Valle firmly dismissed the rumors.”

It’s too bad those rumours were dismissed, but we’re still crossing our fingers that they’re true. We think this could only be good news for Schiaparelli, a brand that’s gone without a head designer for the last several years. Galliano’s been a free agent for a while now, and the pairing could be a good first step back and a match made in heaven—quite romantic, actually.

Prep time! Our picks for the best Boxing Day sales to hit across the country

Comments

Boxing Day: It strikes fear in the hearts of retail workers, and trumps Christmas celebrations for all bargain addicts. For the rest of us, it’s an opportunity to pick up what our well-meaning significant others didn’t end up buying us for the holidays. If you are willing to brave the cold, the lineups (like the one pictured above at Toronto’s Eaton Centre), and the inevitable Christmas hangover, here are some shops that you should check out.

Can’t. Stop. Staring. Michael Pitt is the new face of Prada menswear for Spring 2012

Comments

The insanely beautiful face of Michael Pitt is part of Prada’s Spring 2012 menswear campaign, and we can’t stop staring. The campaign features him looking perfectly pouty, “[exploring] the language of male role models from the rock star to the playboy, from the self-reflective introvert to the engaging and humorous farceur.” We don’t really care what it’s showing, though, we’re just glad to see his Boardwalk Empire–era hair, his broad shoulders, and… what were we talking about again?

They said/We said: Kardashians accused of using sweatshops

Comments

Photography by Michael Tran/FilmMagic

Star magazine’s recently released cover story has the Kardashian fam under fire. Star is claiming that the lines K-Dash by Kardashian, the Kris Jenner Collection, and ShoeDazzle are all manufactured in sweatshops in China, where workers, some of them children, are exposed to inhumane working conditions.

The main source of these allegations comes from Charles Kernaghan, the executive director of the Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights. Since the Star article was released, TMZ reported that Kernaghan went back on his allegations (“Wait on the article,” he told the Star, because he had no proof) closely followed by a statement on RadarOnline claiming that he stands by what he said in the article (“We don’t know what [TMZ is] talking about. I don’t disagree with a single thing [Star] said so I don’t know what they are saying”). Confused yet?

Created from the brilliant imagination of Danish-born designer Vibe Lundermark, the London-based label, Tabernacle Twins, is the latest to catch our eye. Lundermark is fairly new on the scene—she graduated from the Royal College of Art in London in 2009 with an MA in womenswear and knitwear, and her first collection showed at Fall 2010 Copenhagen Fashion Week. We only caught on recently but as we dive into collections past, we cant help but be hypnotized.

They Said/We said: The scoop on Donna Karan’s controversial new ad

Comments

Donna Karan’s Spring 2012 collection was heavily inspired by Haiti. Karan’s been spending a lot of time in the Caribbean country doing charity work since last year’s earthquake, and uses her celebrity to raise money for her own charity and several others. All of the print ads for the collection were shot in Haiti, and they’re rich in the country’s culture but—surprise, surprise!—sources are claiming one of the pictures is insensitive and even racist.

The controversial picture has Adriana Lima in front, glowing in an olive-coloured jumpsuit and statement necklace, with two Haitian men lurking in the shadows in the background. The complaints again these ads range from the choice of using a white model in Haitian-based photos and the placement of Haitian men in the shadows of an otherwise glamorous photo, to the picture drawing attention to the huge divide between a luxe fashion brand and the Haitian population. None of the pictures make direct reference to Haiti’s extreme poverty, but the juxtaposition is very clear.

They said/We said: Fashion insiders weigh in on Raf Simons’ rumoured move to Dior

Comments

The fashion community is starting to weigh in on the reports that Raf Simons will be Dior’s new creative director, and we’re not surprised to hear both positive and negative expectations. Dior is widely known for its decorative, romantic, and ladylike style, and Galliano’s over-the-top vision fit the brand perfectly. Simons is known for a much more minimalist style, but has been showing different sides of himself in the last few Jil Sander collections. Read more »

Your sneak peek at KARL, the kaiser’s new line in partnership with Net-A-Porter

Talk about a perfect pairing. Karl Lagerfeld has teamed up with Net-A-Porter for the launch of his recently announced new line, KARL. The online luxury retailer will be the only place to snag these styles in North America when the line becomes available on January 25 of next year. In the sneak-peek images, we’re seeing mostly traditional shapes with the iconic Lagerfeld edge—and we’re already dreaming of owning it all. With over 70 pieces in the collection, and the price point much lower than lots of his other wears—from Karl-cameo’d totes at $50 all the way up to leather biker jackets for around $1,000—you should probably save up that extra Christmas money, it’s not long now till it’s all available.
