Toronto’s new Pretty Beauty & Books is good clean fun

Comments

The modern eco-savvy girl differs from the granola set when it comes to her beauty wares: it’s got to be vanity table-display worthy. At Toronto’s Pretty Beauty & Books (587 Markham Street, 905 580-0285, prettybeautyandbooks.com), which just had its grand opening last Saturday, pretty packaging is a non-negotiable; therefore, something you won’t find is “soap wrapped in twine” says owner—and former FASHION beauty intern—Andrea Victory. She stocks her shelves with gorgeous, synthetic-free lines such as editorial makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift’s RMS Beauty, water-based nail polish Scotch Naturals (“rated safest on the market”) and Tallulah Jane fragrances, made using old world, pre-lab methods such as distillation and enfleurage.

Mineral sunscreens: The new SPF rockstars

Comments

Suncare

Those of us who take pride in protecting our skin from the irreversible damage of UV rays reach for a bottle of sunscreen as instinctually as we would a toothbrush. It doesn’t matter which form: cream, lotion or spray. Fearful of coming out of the sun looking like Donatella Versace, we apply it generously and with vigour, confident that our skin’s health is being preserved. But it turns out there’s more to choosing a sunscreen than simply considering the spf number on the bottle. It’s becoming clear that mineral (also known as physical) formulas—which use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to physically deflect rays—are winning many people over.

In praise of peonies: L’Occitane’s ode to our favourite flower

Comments

Photography by Carlo Mendoza

I’m hardly original when I say the peony is my all time favourite flower; it’s the only one I’ve ever made an effort to plant and I am in no way what you’d consider a gardener. But I love how fat and bulbous they get, with so many layers of petals that they seem like they’re ready to burst. L’Occitane clearly feels the same way: they’re launching a limited edition makeup collection in honour of the robust flower, dubbed Pivoine Flora.

Line Knitwear Fall 2011

Photography by Jenna Marie Wakani.

For fall, Line sent out their signature knits on what co-designer Jennifer Wells described as European settlers from the 1930s. With each model wearing a skull cap and/or headband, the hair was intended to look “wavy and distressed, not too perfect, like they’ve been traveling,” she explained. To that end, lead hair artist Eric del Monaco created bend in the hair using a similar technique he used at Joe Fresh earlier in the week: wrapping sections with a large barrel curling iron from midway down the shaft. A dab of Studio Line Mineral FX Modeling Gel-Cream was then rubbed to give it a slightly weathered look.

TFW backstage beauty: Pink Tartan

Comments

Photography by Jenna Marie Wakani

Topknots⎯the unofficial hairstyle of last summer⎯are alive and kickin’. It’s perched high on the head of the Pink Tartan lady for fall 2011 to be exact. “There’s lots of military pieces, so we wanted a hard/soft aspect to the woman,” explained L’Oreal Paris’ Lead Hair Artist Eric del Monaco. After spritzing hair with water, he made a high pony, split it into two sections and twisted one into a loop and wrapped the other one around the base. Creative director Veronica Chu called the style “organized chaos” saying it was “contained and controlled”. Surely the inescapable mist of Elnett that seemed to hang in a cloud over the area ensured that. Lead Makeup Artist Eddie Malter gave models a hard edge with a dramatic dark eye done in black shadow that extended out and was purposely done not to look “clean” and avoided mascara altogether. He used his backstage MVP product, Wear Infinite Eye Shadow in “Morning Light” to add highlights down the nose and on cheekbones and took down brows and lips with a bit of concealer. The final touch was gloss added to the lids right before the girls took to the runway.

TFW backstage beauty: IZMA

Comments

Photography by Jenna Marie Wakani

I didn’t attend LG Fashion Week last night and therefore, did not poke around backstage
at IZMA to grill the L’Oreal Paris hair and makeup teams about what they
were whipping up to complement the ultra glam collection, but damn I wish I
 had.

TFW backstage beauty: Greta Constantine

Comments

Photography by Jenna Marie Wakani

“The makeup has a cold feeling,” said M.A.C Cosmetics Senior Artist Melissa Gibson backstage at Greta Constantine on Friday night. Fitting since, “backstage” was actually the frigid basement of the Audi dealership. With references that included Tibetan children and Tilda Swinton in Orlando, Gibson created what she called “almost a non makeup, but there’s kind of this wind burnt lower cheek.” In addition, pictures of Renaissance women that she found online as part of her research compelled her to put “some redness around the eye,” but was quick to disassociate it from the kind one develops from too much partying. “It just gives a pure look to the face.” To mimic the “really ruddy, great skin” of the Tibetan tots, Gibson mixed M.A.C Cream Colour Blush in “Premeditated” and “Movie Star Red” and deepened it with “Root”. On lids, she applied M.A.C Eye Shadow in “Coral” and “Orange”, layered it with “Sushi Flower” and softened it with M.A.C Mineralize Skin Finish to make it look more “fleshy”.  Lashes were left bare, and lips muted out with a touch of concealer.
