Shop like a Gossip Girl

Goodbye Carrie and Samantha, hello Blair and Serena! The pop culture fashionettes who are putting New York City on the shopping map these days are a whole new generation of style. So if you’re planning to head to the Grande Pomme for a shopping trip, do it like a Gossip Girl would. First things first, set up base camp at The New York Palace (455 Madison Ave., newyorkpalace.com). The posh midtown spot is practically a character in the show (Chuck Bass has a suite there, Serena lived there, Serena and Blair eat there) and many of the show’s scenes are shot in its various rooms. Speaking of rooms—the bathrooms alone are giant enough to store a week’s worth of conspicuous consumption, and the location—adjacent to Bergdorfs and within skipping distance (wear flats!) of several GG-friendly stores—makes it’s the dream spot for a retail rendezvous. Or ten.

There’s a reason us FASHION girls hire real photographers to take all the pretty pictures—because buttons are Hard. But now that we’re doing so many videos on fashionmagazine.com, are obsessed with runway shows on YouTube and we need to make sure we take hi-larious videos of ourselves and our stylish friends at all our events, we’re going to bite the bullet and learn to video record our very own selves. What day is it? Which show am I at? What’s my name? I’ve started to slip into the delusional state that is called “almost the end of fashion week”, where it all becomes a blur of coltish legs and directional hair. Get on the metro, wait in line, clothes, pretty! Get on the metro, wait in line, clothes, pretty! Get lost on the metro, wait in line, clothes, pretty!

It really isn’t Paris fashion week proper until the Chanel show. Held in the stunning, light-bathed Grand Palais (it’s so beautiful it makes me use phrases like “light-bathed”!) and with Katie Mossypants in the audience, bien sur, the show was classic Karl.

STELLA MCCARTNEY Fall 2009. Photography by Peter Stigter

“God, who are they photographing?” I keep asking, as the crowd of shooters seems rooted to the spot over some unfortunate soul in the front row at Stella McCartney.  It’s not Thandie Newton, it’s not Kanye West, it’s not Beth Ditto (who comes in at the very last minute with a six-person entourage). Who could it be? Finally they move away. Oh rigggght. Paul McCartney. That guy. Read more »

At Andrew Gn (cool daywear in black, tweed, copper and white made edgy with leather and snake trims and massive earrings, and uber-glam eveningwear like miles of belted column dresses) I bump into Nicholas Mellamphy who recently had to shutter his cool Yorkville boutique Hazel. Guess what? Now he’s working for the Bay as part of their new fashion-forward strategy. Look out, Holts!

I suppose there could be worse jobs in the world than to have to start your day with a tour through the über-chic Roger Vivier showroom to get a sneak peek at fall’s treats. “Catherine” (as in Deneuve) asked Bruno (as in Frisoni, the Vivier designer) for a new ballet flat,” the PR rep tells me, “so he made her one!” (Hint: it has a pointy-toe with a slight platform). A deck of cards is the theme for the season, and I don’t want to give to much away, but I really heart it in spades.

Day two starts not with a bang, but with a “meh” at the Issey Miyake show. Designer Dai Fujiwara collaborated with karate masters to develop flexible fabrics for his latest offerings and the “katas” that the rent-a-karate-masters performed almost stole the show.
