Montreal: From the Cirque du Soleil to your closet

Every once in a while you get to meet someone genuinely good and inspiring, with sparkles in her eyes that gets you thinking that if you’d known her a little bit better you’d realize her heart is bigger than Mount Everest. To me, that person is the sweet Jennifer Glasgow, proud co-owner of one of my favourite boutiques, General 54 (54 St. Viateur W., 514-271-2129, general54.blogspot.com) and designer of her own eponymous label.

Q&A: Clayton Evans of Complexgeometries

Comments

Clayton Evans is busy, busy, busy and his Complexgeometries line (available at Reborn, complexgeometries.com) is getting so much attention and praise. I had the Alberta-born, Montreal-based designer, who recently showed his Fall 2009 collection, “…between good and evil,” answer some questions, loosely inspired by the designs. But first, the completely self-taught scissor master would probably appreciate if I told you a bit about the concept behind his latest creations. Evans describes his inspiration as “the grey zone existing between right and wrong.” The palette is mostly black, white and grey and the designs are made without an obvious front or back, allowing you to wear them however you like. Even better, Evans suggests that his large collars and capes “can be used to create modesty or conceal shame.” Since when do designers think about our obsessing over little flaws when creating a piece of clothing? So here’s Evans’ world in five little questions–my own condensed Proust questionnaire!

My favorite Sundays are usually the ones where I get to read a book while eating breakfast on the counter at Dusty’s, topped off by a nice walk through Mile End and up to one of my favorite little stores, General 54 (54 St. Viateur W., 514-271-2129, general54.blogspot.com).  Read more »

A great ending to Montreal Fashion Week: Denis Gagnon’s runway show and after-party at the Fullum & Holt factory last Thursday! After regaining consciousness from the hypnotic and impressive fashion show (read all about it on Shirine’s blog), people woke up slowly to tunes mixed by Thomas Von Party while greeting friends and acquaintances on the temporary catwalk that crossed the factory.

The hell with cold! I’m putting on my four-inch heels, my chapka and my fringe skirt for Montreal Fashion Week (March 2 to 5, semainemodemontreal.ca), returning to Marché Bonsecours with a line-up that’s more daring and exciting than ever.

My quest against the cold isn’t over dear readers and I’ve had enough of dressing down for winter, looking like a warm-but-ordinary gal. I’m infusing grace and style into my look and at the same time, a little wind from Paris is blowing between my ears.

Montreal: Amherst Street’s design headquarters

feb09mag10_250If you go antique shopping on Amherst Street, as many Montrealers fed up with Ikea do, you’ll find the most exquisite little boutique that has nothing to do with furniture. Headquarters Galerie + Boutique (1649 Amherst St., 514-678-2923, hqgalerieboutique.blogspot.com), run by Angie Johnson and Tyson Bodnarchuk, the loveliest couple in town, is a two-floor space that gives exposure to Montreal artists (including Bodnarchuk) and tons of local designers (including Johnson).
