They said/We said: Who’s afraid of Tanning Bed Mom

Comments

After years of over-exposure to UV rays, Patricia Krentcil (better known as or TBM) is finding herself in a whole different kind of light—the spotlight. Krentil is facing 10 years in prison for second-degree child endangerment after allegedly bringing her five-year-old daughter into a tanning bed.

The whole debacle started after a teacher noticed a serious sunburn on the chubby-cheeked child who remarked she had gone tanning with her mom.  While TBM’s lips were saying her daughter’s burn was from a day of casual gardening, her football-coloured (and textured, for that matter) tan was saying differently. They said/We said: Everyone’s talking about Tom Ford’s NSFW look book

Comments

Tom Ford’s scandalous just-released Spring 2012 men’s lookbook exposes the designer’s affinity for all things sexual (as if that were a surprise). While Ford’s spring collection is conspicuously absent, there is enough naked flesh to make even Dov Charney blush.

The lookbook features a somewhat sleazy male model (read: he wears sunglasses indoors while striking his best “Blue Steel” pose) and his oiled-up female consort. The lolz-y twosome reads newspapers, showers in tandem and plays a mean game of bottom-pinching (hey, it’s certainly got people talking).

While the clothes are almost entirely secondary, the lookbook does feature silky smoking jackets, robes and other Hugh Hefner–esque pieces. And then there are the boxers (or swim trunks—we can’t tell), worthy of a night at the Playboy mansion.

It’s no secret Ford loves gratuitous nudity—remember his men’s fragrance ads with the artfully placed cologne bottle?—but shouldn’t a lookbook feature just a few more looks? Either way, Ford seems to have a sex-sells formula that works for him. Just check out his eyewear campaign where a crow chomps on Freja’s exposed nipple.

Smythe’s doing Pre Fall now. Peep the look book!

Comments

Good news for all jacket (or Kate Middleton)-philes. Canadian label Smythe, best known for their impeccably tailored blazers, has launched its first ever Pre-Fall collection. Designed for “fallmer” (the season between summer and fall, most commonly known as Pre Fall), the collection is chock full of shearling, patterns and slouchy boyish silhouettes perfect for that unpredictable temperate weather. We can definitely see these London-inspired looks on Kate Moss or Sienna Miller (and not just because the model is her doppelganger). The collection will be available nationwide in June.

From Emma Watson’s head-to-toe Miu Miu worn at the Struck by Lightning premiere, to Michelle Williams’ multi-fabric’d Giambattista Valli worn to a party for Take This Waltz, to Riley Keough’s floral Rachel Roy blouse, we’ve got the picks to get the look for $100 or less!

They said/We said: A new study has found that a woman reaches her sartorial prime at age 35

Gone are the days of teenage style icons (okay, maybe not the eternally best-dressed Fanning sisters), when Britney Spears’ plaid miniskirts were the norm. A British study by retailer CC has found that a woman reaches her sartorial prime at age 35. Three out of four women felt their style improved after their 20s with one in three women saying they looked the best they ever had in their 30s.

What gives? Apparently it all comes down to self-confidence, wisdom and maturity. Empowered mid-30-year-olds know how to reference the latest trends with enough confidence to carry them off.

So naturally, we made a list of our personal style icons (think: Chloë Sevigny, Kate Lanphear, Vanessa Paradis, the list goes on) and found that—shocker—they’re all around 35.

And it doesn’t stop at 35. Arguably the best part of this whole study was that iconoplast Helen Mirren beat out Kate Middleton (another 30-year-old) as the celebrity woman most considered to be in her prime. She’s 66! We can’t say we’re surprised though—have you seen her in a bikini? She’s a total knockout.

It’s high time we recognize the style contributions of the mature set. The success of blogs like Advanced Style has shown that style doesn’t fade with age. We aspire to dress like those women. Just look at two of M.A.C’s most recent collections: Carine Roitfeld and Iris Apfel. Both mature ladies and both with closets we’d gladly dive into.

Drink some wine, win some Louboutins. Say what?

Comments

Wine label STLTO is playing the role of Willy Wonka—only instead of a trip to a chocolate factory, you could win a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes, which in our world is almost better. The winery has announced that three bottles—available at LCBOs province wide—will be emblazoned with the word “WINNER” under their sparkly caps. Is this a welcome throwback to the days of contests under Coke caps or what?

If you’re lucky enough to snatch one of the winning bottles, you can redeem it for a pair of red-soles worth up to $795. And if you don’t win, you still have a bottle of STLTO Malbec/Merlot or Chardonnay to enjoy. Just head to the nearest (or every) LCBO before June 30 to try your hand and check out the STLTO website for all the official rules and deadlines. Sip some wine and win some new shoes? We’re not sure it can get any better than that.

Party time! H&M and the Beckerman sisters will be popping up in Yonge-Dundas Square next week

The Pop Up poster

H&M is launching its inaugural “Summer Lounge” pop-up shop curated by the super-blogging Beckerman sisters of Toronto’s Beckerman Bite Plate. Set in Yonge-Dundas Square, the lounge will feature select pieces from the Swedish retailer’s summer collection. Given the Beckermans’ notoriously fun take on street style, we can’t wait to see what they’ve picked out (we snooped their blog and saw mentions of bird prints, neons, and ‘80s surf style—amazing). Grab a drink, enter to win a $500 gift card, and do some summer shopping. The pop-up will be… popped up May 3 and 4 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Anthropologie announces its latest batch of Made in Kind designer collaborations

Comments

The latest in Anthropologie’s Made in Kind designer partnerships is here (well, almost) and, frankly, we’re obsessed. For May, the retailer will collaborate with labels like Tracy Reese, Charlotte by Charlotte Taylor, Beguile by Byron Lars, and several dresses from the India Collections. The collections feature prints and brights galore—all perfect for a summer poolside look (we’re eyeing the canary yellow Charlotte by Charlotte Taylor dress).

Of course, there’ll also be some new pieces from staple favourites like Rachel Rose and Place Nationale. The newest installment hits stores tomorrow—just in time to re-stock your summer wears.
