Nothing brightens up the week quite like an impromptu appearance by the Duchess of Cambridge! The Queen held her first garden party of the year today at Buckingham Palace and low and behold, Kate Middleton was there, along with her in-laws, Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and hundreds of other guests.

Considering that many a garden party style guide is based on Kate’s year-round wardrobe choices, it’s basically mandatory that she attend. (Okay, it’s not, but we’re not the only ones who would be disappointed if the garden party went Middleton-less.) Last year Kate wore a pastel-pink pleated Emilia Wickstead dress and this year she stuck with the same designer, though changing up the colour and style. Read more »

Bouffant hair tutorial: How to add some Lana Del Rey-approved volume to your look

Bouffant hair tutorial

Photography by Carlo Mendoza; Hair and makeup by Margot Keith; Model: Daphne/Plutino Group

Alright kids, this hair tutorial is a fun one. Considering that she’s the cover of our Summer issue, it only made sense to take inspiration from Lana Del Rey for a hair tutorial. While she’s often spotted styling her hair in loose waves or a deep side part (both of which we just happen to have tutorials for as well: waves here, side-part here) Lana Del Rey’s fondness for the ’50s and ’60s mean she’s sported a bouffant more than once. The video for “National Anthem” is all about the Lana Del Rey bouffant and she wore her hair up for much of her summer festival tour in 2012.

While the thought of attempting to add a few inches of volume to your hair may seem overwhelming, the bouffant is easier to master than you may think. If you can tease your hair, you can do a bouffant. This bouffant hair tutorial was created in conjunction with Toronto-based hairstylist Margot Keith, who knows a thing or two about adding impressive amounts of volume to even the sleekest heads of hair. She’s also made learning how to do a bouffant totally foolproof. Read on for our complete step-by-step hair tutorial. Read more »

Rooney Mara is the face of Calvin Klein’s newest fragrance, Downtown Calvin Klein

Rooney Mara has once again teamed up with David Fincher, but this time it’s for a campaign for Calvin Klein’s newest women’s fragrance, Downtown Calvin Klein. Described as a perfume for “women that live by their own rules,” Mara’s no-nonsense persona and demure, moody looks make her a natural choice for the face of the brand.

The perfume—which is described as a balance of feminine woodsy scents with soft floral notes—hits counters in July, just as the Fincher-directed campaign will debut on television screens across the country. Mara and Fincher have worked together on both The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Social Network and the short film for Downtown Calvin Klein will have a similar cinematic appeal. The black and white campaign (which is set to Yeah Yeah Yeahs song “Runaway”) shows Mara traversing through New York City and “living in her own world, breaking away from the ‘expected.’” Read more »

When Angelina Jolie announced her preventive double mastectomy in yesterday’s New York Times, the almost-instant reactions were unanimous: Jolie was praised for her courage in both having the surgery and opening up to the public about it. Today that openness has continued, with Jolie’s doctor at the Pink Lotus Breast Center posting further details about the decision making process and medical procedures the actress undertook. It is by far the most detailed account we’ve ever read of any celebrity’s private medical information—to the point that you actually have to remind yourself while reading that it’s specifically about Angelina Jolie.

While Jolie’s double mastectomy makes headlines all over the world, other women with “the breast cancer gene” are now coming forward to talk about their own experiences. Read more »

In terms of famous mother-daughter duos, is there a pair more precious than Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson? They both have sparkling smiles, contagious laughs and a knack for starring in films that become instant classics. (We’re not the only ones who could watch Death Becomes Her and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days on repeat, right?) As for their relationship, red carpet snaps and paparazzi shots alike would lead you to believe that they’re an IRL Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Well, after speaking to the pair on the phone earlier this month, I can indeed confirm: Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson finish each other’s sentences, make each other laugh and have a genuine mother-daughter rapport that makes you wish they’d adopt you. All of this is to say, it’s no wonder that Almay selected them as brand ambassadors for Mother’s Day. (Psst, it’s Sunday, May 12!) Kate’s been working with Almay since 2010, but this is Goldie’s first involvement with the brand, so I asked the duo about their thoughts on makeup, growing up and more. Read more »

Punk has never been so hotly debated. Ever since the Met Gala red carpet ended last night, anyone who’s a fan of fashion—and has a Twitter account—has shared their opinion on who interpreted the punk theme the best and who did it the worst. (Want to see all our best dressed picks? We have a full Met Gala 2013 style gallery up here.)

For hair and makeup, some stars took the Met Gala—and its theme, based on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new PUNK: Chaos to Couture exhibit—as reason enough to let loose and go all out. (Though Miley Cyrus probably doesn’t need such literal prompting!) You’d think after attending months of award shows with well-dictated dress codes that many A-listers would embrace the Met Gala as a chance to try something new. January Jones did: “I love to step outside the box,” she said of her braided hair and slick, black makeup, which was inspired by Siouxsie Sioux.

While there were certainly some gorgeous hairstyles and classic beauty looks on the Met Gala red carpet, let’s celebrate those who went beyond the cat-eye liner, red lip or sleek updo. From Elle Fanning’s tie-dyed, watercolour eyes to Cara Delevingne’s mock side-shave hair, here’s who we think had the best Met Gala beauty looks. Read more »

Toronto Life Spring Stylebook party photos

Is there a better indication that spring has finally sprung than an empty coat check room at a party? Such was the case at the launch for the spring issue of the Toronto Life Stylebook—there was an abundance of sheer dresses, bare legs and strappy sandals but not a single winter accessory in sight. Adding to the spring atmosphere were Edward Scissorhands-worthy topiaries that dotted the Distillery District’s Fermenting Cellar and greeted guests at the party’s entrance.

Speaking of guests, Toronto Life Stylebook cover girl Sarah Gadon was a perfect fit for the role of guest of honour, wearing a sleek blue and black Greta Constantine dress from the Fall 2013 collection. Considering that many of the partygoers have appeared on most-fashionable lists (be it Toronto Life’s or elsewhere) it was hard to stay focused on one outfit for more than a few seconds. The Beckerman sisters kept things colourful with Samantha in a neon accented blouse and Caillianne in a pastel floral-print dress. Florals certainly were the uniform of choice for the party—from vibrant digital prints to whispy petals, watching the crown was like witnessing an Erdem and Mary Katranzou-themed Pinterest board come to life.

Coco Rocha vs. Katy Perry: Who’s flower-filled hairstyle looks the best?

Floral headdresses may seem like the number one accessory for a music festival but two stylish A-listers have taken the look to the red carpet. Coco Rocha and Katy Perry wore flowers in their hair over the weekend, to the Kentucky Derby and The Great Gatsby NYC premiere, respectively. While the hairstyles were different—Perry opted to weave flowers into a halo braid while Rocha used orchids to complement her Derby hat—the colours were very similar, with both women wearing lavender, mauve and vibrant-purple blooms.

Considering that the hats get just as competitive as the horses at the Kentucky Derby, Coco Rocha’s take on the may-as-well-be-mandatory style is extremely elegant. The Phillip Treacy hat is balanced with a low chignon bun to one side and vibrant orchids on the other. Couldn’t you picture Kate Middleton in this hat, hairstyle and orchid combination? (Come to think of it, Kate would also be into the Zac Posen jacket and skirt that Rocha’s wearing.) Of course, the best part of this look has to be Coco Rocha’s lipstick—it matches both the flowers and the lining on her jacket and suits her red hair. We’re still waiting for confirmation on the colour, but it looks very much like Maybelline ColorSensational Vivids in “Pink Pop” so get thee to the drugstore if you want to duplicate this look.
