Heels may always take top fashion honours, but sneakers are most definitely the shoes of the last century. On Thursday night, they were officially inducted into shoe history with the opening of Bata Shoe Museum’s Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture, the first exhibit of its kind in North America. Beginning with ultimate function’s first pair made in 1873 (they were called plimsoles at the time), the exhibit features everything from the iconic— Nike Dunk Supremes—to the hyper fashionable—Pierre Hardy’s Poworama sneakers.

Matching the exhibit’s out of the box theme, the museum had Toronto-born and internationally lauded industrial designer Karim Rashid, who is known to collect a sneaker or two himself, design the exhibit. In signature monochrome (this time it was head-to-toe white) Rashid kicked off the exhibit alongside the museum’s iconic founder, Sonja Bata and FASHION’s editor in chief, Bernadette Morra. After taking in a break dancing performance from Unity Charity, the crowd, which included persistent girl about town, Jen Kirsch and recent Come Date With Me Canada bachelorette Gail McInnes, hiked up three flights of stairs to take in the exhibit. To those who hiked in heels, we salute you.

See what our editors wore to prom »

Oh, prom. That all-important day in many a young lady’s life that comes and goes with many awkward photos to document. We all aspire to be gazelles, but most of end up looking all too earthly too forget. Ill-placed bows, unflattering chiffon cuts, forehead framing ringlets… y’all know what we’re talking about. Prom.

Since we’re big into making prom as awesomely fashionable as possible for our youngest readers, we decided to throw our own prom looks into the ring as both cautionary tales and endearing looks back as what we looked like back on our respective big nights out.

Take a peek at what some of FASHION’s editors looked like on prom night!

See everything Kate’s worn since her engagement »

It seems pregnancy has brought out the Duchess of Cambridge’s experimental side. We know Kate to be a favourer of tried and tested solid hues and silhouettes, yet in the last week, she’s gone rogue with mint green, polka dots and now coral. Must be something in the bath water.

Earlier today, Kate and her baby bump were out sharing her role as Royal Patron of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices. In support of Children’s Hospice Week (which runs though May 3), the Duchess visited Naomi House, a hospice for children with life-limiting conditions. As usual, she was hit with all the Royal-adoring children in attendance. In addition to visiting the House’s grounds and joining in for a tea party with the children and their families, Kate released her first video message encouraging donations for and raising awareness of the cause.

Kate’s sunny visit was matched by that sunny coral look: a cotton overcoat by none other than Canada’s own Tara Jarmon! The Paris-based designer’s coat is a first for the Duchess, who regularly favours another Canadian-born designer, Erdem Moriaglou. What up, team Canada!

Already a favourite spot with the fashion set, add a worthy cause to a party at Toronto’s Jonathan + Olivia boutique and you’ve got a full house. Last night, J+O owners Nic Jones and Jackie O’Brien Jones (and their cherubic son, Phoenix) hosted “This is Queen Street West,” a clothing drive in support of CAMH‘s the Suits Me Fine Boutique alongside Queen Street West mainstays Jeremy Laing, Frank Griggs, Derrick Hodgson, Jesse Girard, Richard Lambert, Brendan Canning and Alison Milne. Suits Me Fine, which provides clothing for patients of the treatment centre, received stylish donations from everyone in attendance, as each party-goer was required to bring an office-appropriate article of clothing upon entry. As Canning and Laing hit the turn tables, the hip crowd snacked on M&Ms and basked in their hipness. Much like a typical night out on Ossington Avenue, I spose, but this time it was for a cause.

Beyoncé debuts jet black hair and a new song in H&M’s swim ad

Comments

Ah! Beyoncé’s first H&M video promo is out and, well, you already know how we feel about it. Bikini-clad on a remote beach in the Bahamas, Queen Bey twerks her otherworldly curves in the brand’s latest swim collection while debuting her latest single, “Standing On the Sun.” Most importantly perhaps, the 31-year-old singer also debuts new hair—a sleek jet black elbow length cut, which of course, looks  amazing. Writhing around in the sand and water, Queen Bey shows off H&M’s high waisted tie-dye bikinis, long and flowing poolside dresses and a feather crown which comes fairly close to fire, but not too close, cause she’s Queen Bey.

The Duchess of Cambridge wears a loose-fitting floral Erdem dress while launching a new counseling program in Manchester

I never thought I’d see the day. Kate’s gone boho! Kinda. After holding fast to traditionally form fitting and tailored pieces up until the 6-months pregnant mark (and by that, we mean yesterday’s appearance), the Duchess of Cambridge seems to finally be embracing a slightly looser style with today’s appearance in Manchester.

Kate paid a visit to The Willows Primary School to launch a counseling program in conjunction with one of her new patronages, Place2Be. The charity, which counsels and support children with emotional issues, will partner with Action on Addiction, another of Kate’s patronages, as well as Comic Relief and the Royal Foundation to offer counseling for parents and children who suffer from or are affected by addictions.

While the visit gave Kate an opportunity to see the program in action and interact with students, her visit was blemished by an arsonist’s fire that burned down the school’s playground earlier this month. Sad face. (You can donate to the clean-up/rebuild here!)

The Duchess of Cambridge wore Erdem’s black and floral Sophia Visconti Bloom dress (what do you know, it’s still available on matches.com). Though the dress is described as a fitted style, we’d venture to guess that Kate went for a size up. As photo’d here, the bust and waist shaping seem much looser than we’re used to seeing on her body. Bring on the boho! Might a royal muumuu be in order?

If Canada’s latest crop of cool has taught us anything, it’s that the ultimate creativity comes from collaboration. Take the sister act behind the newly renamed label Beaufille (formerly Chloé Comme Parris) for example, or the creative team behind Toronto’s go-to nail mecca, Tips Nail Bar. The best results are often a team effort.

It’s with this pretext that Toronto-based stylist and fashion director Dwayne Kennedy operates. Along with his many collaborators, most notably his The Collections partner Brian A. Richards; he’s been responsible for much creative and young gun business around town, including the up-and-coming designer specific portion of Toronto Fashion Week, which has boasted the impressive likes of Rad Hourani and Sid Neigum.

The Royal baby bump watch continues. The Duchess of Cambridge was out in a rather springy look yesterday, as she attended the National Review of Queen’s Scouts at Windsor Castle. A volunteer with the Scouts Association since January of last year, Kate’s visit was marked, as usual, by a presentation of a floral bouquet, as she and the rest of the crowd watched the annual National Scout Service and Parade which featured the Scouts Band and the Irish Guards playing kid-friendly songs like “New York” and “Star Wars.”

Chief Scout Bear Grylls (if you’ve ever seen Man vs. Wild, you’ll know he’s got the scout chops) was on hand to greet Kate and told reporters that she “is an incredible role model and she helps us show that Scouting’s not just for boys.”
