Connecticut noise rockers Magik Markers, play Suoni Per Il Popolo on June 28

Despite the chilly weather, summer’s here and we’re getting ready to inaugurate the season in style! First, we’re booking a pass for Suoni Per Il Popolo (June 3 to 30, suoniperilpopolo.org), Montreal’s coolest avant-garde music festival. Soul-rock lovers will flock to TV on the Radio’s concert tomorrow, free-jazz aficionados are dying to get a ticket for Dave Burrell (June 6), and French pop freaks are heading to Pas Chic Chic (June 5). Summer lovin’

Comments

It’s spring again, and yours truly has been very socially active – in a frugalista’s wardrobe, but who cares? At the season’s hottest event, the Montreal Museum of Fine Art’s Eyes Wide Open fundraising gala (lesyeuxgrandsouverts.com), the city’s finest danced, drank champagne and sake, clad in fantastic geisha-inspired costumes. There were kimonos galore, but also live sumo wrestling and performances all over the museum. We already can’t wait to find out the theme for next year!

Blame it on the recession or the freezing temperatures, but the mood at Montreal Fashion Week was at once festive and dark. Crowds braved the icy sidewalks in their shiny stilettos and lightweight coats to flock to the illuminated Marché Bonsecours, where there were few shows but a good dose of fun parties.

Brightening up for the new year

Comments

It’s been a hectic month and I’ve done everything to contribute to the saggy wreck that freaks me out in the mirror. Booze in excess, dessert five times a day, packs and packs of cigarettes and way too many sleepless nights followed by tons of caffeine.

Wish list: Cozy boots

Comments

Gift idea # 3 : A pair of cozy boots

With all the snow that’s been falling, don’t you all have a pair of good boots on your wish list? For the warmest and most solid winter shoes on the market, head to La Canadienne (273 Laurier Ave. W., 514-270-8008, lacanadienne.ca). There you’ll find some pretty funky and elegant styles that’ll get you through the rough weather with ease. We love the shearling snow boots (shown, $450), but for urban dwellers, the equestrians or westerns are just perfect to get from the snowy roads to after work cocktails.

Wish list: A cooking class

Comments

Recessionistas are rediscovering the simple pleasures of homemade meals, and they’ll surely enjoy the not-so-simple foie gras cooking class by caterer extraordinaire Denise Cornellier (December 10, $225, cornelliertraiteur.com). From fancy holiday hors d’oeuvres to hearty soups with a twist and scrumptious mains, your dear ones might very well surprise you with fine new delicacies at this year’s Xmas dinner party.
