Global cosmetic titan L’Oréal is officially a centenarian. The French brand can trace its humble beginnings back to hair dye cooked up in chemist Eugène Scheuller’s Parisian apartment. While one of its first products created for the public was a tanning oil (quelle horreur), today the company holds a patent on a sunscreen stabilzer, which speaks to its long-standing relevance.–Lesa Hannah
