Hearing about makeup artists’ brushes with celebrities—especially if they’re slightly salacious—is often the cherry on top of the conversation. Smashbox pro lead artist Lori Taylor’s stories weren’t dishy, but that didn’t make me love them any less when she was in town last week to preview the brand’s Fall 2010 launches. Given that the company’s roots are in Los Angeles—the line was created to meet the demands of shoots at a photo studio of the same name—Taylor runs into the Hollywood elite frequently. When she mentioned she had been doing touch-ups at the recent MTV Movie Awards, of course I had to press for names. None were too impressive, but the one that did make me squeal out loud was the mention of the last living Golden Girl, Betty White. The coolest 88-year-old in show biz requested a lipstick fix from Taylor backstage, and the makeup artist happily obliged, combining Photo Finish Lipstick in “Stunning” and—how fitting—“Legendary.” While Taylor says that she rarely gets star-struck, she admits to immediately texting her GG-loving boyfriend to share the incident. As for her hair, White declined any adjustments to the style she’s probably been sporting for the last 50 years. “It didn’t move,” Taylor recalls.  Ah Betty, bless her heart. She’s one of the only people who could be in a beauty rut and make it seem cute.

And oh yeah, the Smashbox products coming in September? Lots of goodies, such as Limitless Eye Liners that come with a sharpener built into the cap, O-Gloss Noir, which morphs into a custom berry shade, and a nine-colour eye palette that includes a lovely mauvey-taupe that I had to apply then and there—and I wear shadow, like three times a year.

P.S. The other person that Taylor admits she freaked out in the presence of was the grand queen of runway makeup, Ms. Pat McGrath. Taylor spied her having a chat with photographer Steven Meisel at the Smashbox studios, but she composed herself and simply passed by, wanting to respect their privacy. We get it—you don’t just randomly penetrate a dialogue between those two.
