Last night, the 3rd Annual P&G Beauty & Grooming Awards, which recognizes fashion and beauty editorial work in Canada, was held at the Carlu in Toronto. Kim Cattrall played the role of graceful emcee, and we were pleased to be called to stage not once but twice. Our fashion director Susie Sheffman won for best fashion editor, and this very site took the award for best beauty or fashion website!

However, that’s not all we went home with. Before the show, we sat down with Cattrall and uncovered a few of her favourite beauty tips and tricks:

1. It’s all about the foundation. “A good base is a true sign of a very good makeup artist,” she said. Cattrall emphasized the importance of finding a foundation that blends well (from neck to face!) and to use a mix that’s also good for your skin. (She prefers Laura Mercier because it’s oil free.)

2. Change your shade with the seasons. No matter how perfectly blended your foundation may be, nothing looks worse than a tan face with pale winter skin.

3. Rehydrate after a long day of wear. While on stage in Toronto for Private Lives, Cattrall’s post-show routine started with a shower, because “the first scene I’m in… I’m wearing a towel, so I have body makeup on.” Cattrall used Olay Total Effects Refreshing Citrus Scrub to wash down and then loaded up on moisturizer after.

4. Always curl those lashes. She swears by Shu Uemura’s eyelash curler, but the importance of a great base still trumps stunning lashes as her number one beauty essential.

5. Makeup protects your skin. “Because I’m very fair… I wouldn’t go out without that protection and coverage,” Cattrall said. Even after cleansing at night, she advises applying a little coat of makeup.
